Florida Bright Futures

Has anyone else found out if they will be receiving a scholarship from Florida Bright Futures? I find out yesterday that I am receiving the Academic Scholars 100% FBS scholarship! :) It surely won't cover everything, and I know I'll have to get a full-time job, but it helps! Anyone else?

(I was able to find out a bit earlier than my peers because I have finished up all of my high school requirements, thanks to Dual Enrollment.)

Congrats! Just be aware FAFSA has to be filed each year for bright futures.

So, I wont find out until June (when I graduate)? I was told by a USF admissions officer that we wont find out how much bright futures until August because the state hasn’t decided how much they’ll give per credit hour. Anyone know anymore about this?

Sent from my Vortex using CC

Academic Scholar --currently funds at 101.00 per credit hour-works out to approximately 55% of tuition.

Rate is determined each year and historically has decreased over the years-used to pay 100% plus a book stipend.

gouf78, thanks!

heybails, I’m not quite sure about that one. My guidance counselors at my high school are quite incompetent, but they told me that I am one of three people in my school to hear back about what I am going to be awarded because all of my high school requirements are done. I would assume you would find out by June, when you graduate.

thetruth2012, thanks for the info. I am totally aware that 100% is not truly 100% anymore, which is why I mentioned that I will have to have a full-time job, which I have. I will be transferred up to Gainesville for my job, so I have this all planned out. But thanks again for the info. It is such a shame that it’s not what used to be given anymore, but I understand. At least I’m receiving something.

Also, I hear UF is considered a “great value” college? Anyone know anything more about this? What does that necessarily mean?

In response to the post about whether UF is a “full value college” that arises from what Kiplinger posts as the best value publi colleges in America. UF is within the top 15 or so public colleges or universities. There annual tuition for 2011-2012 was based on 15 credit hours each for two semesters about $5400. The total cost of attendance including room and board, books, travel to and from school and miscellaneous expenses total another 14,300. That is an annual COA of about $19,700. Also remember if you are low income and qualify for a full Pell Grant financial aid will include a Pell Grant of up to $5,500, possibly an FSEOG Grant, a Florida Assistance Grant, Stafford Subsidized and UnSubsidized Loans up to $5,500 Florida Bright futures Academic Scholar Award of $3,750 and FWS up about 3,000.
These amounts are based on 2011-2012 amounts. So that value relies on getting an excellent academic education at low cost and the opportunity if you are low income to have the vast majority of the cost covered by a financial aid package. Of course each person and their financial circumstances are different so make sure all financial forms are fuilly completed and filed on time.

@mnyawn when did you find out because i kno u can find out in March i’v been waiting…

How did you find out? By email? (:

My high school guidance counselor told me. I was the only one in my school to find out as early as I did, though, because I have finished all of my high school course work already and am Early Admissions at a community college. I found out in February.

Just to pass this along. The Florida Legislature has changed the following rules, requirements and criteria for Bright Futures.

Total amount of payment per credit hour has been reduced.

Renewal criteria of college GPA has been increased.

Time frame to use BF has been changed.

Must annually file FAFSA to apply for and receive BF.

Initial qualification criteria is being increased and phased in over the next few years.

For Innovation Academy BF can be used during Summer session.

Worried about tution increase for the Fall 2012 and reduced BF.
Wish they would let us know earlier what the cost is going to be so we can plan.
Also heard that dorm fees are increasing and some of them quite much.
