Hello, I just got back my scores from the November SAT and I got a 2340, 790 CR, 750 M, and 800 W. This is a good score, I know that. However, my lowest score was in math, which is supposed to be my strength. I want to major in STEM, so math is important. Plus I was kind of depending on my scores, along with my GPA, to take me to college, since my ECs are weak. So do you think there’s a way to make up for that, since I don’t want to retake? I’m not aiming for MIT or Caltech, but maybe Harvey Mudd…
Take the Math II Subject Test.
My older son the math guy never cracked 760 either. He got an 800 on the verbal twice. The curve is brutal. You miss one “not” or forget a step in a 4th grade problem and poof, you’ve lost 20 points. He got into Harvard and CMU. Not Caltech, waitlisted at Harvey Mudd (but it wasn’t actually that good a fit and he phone in his application there.)
There’s so much written about this on these boards. First off, congratulations on an excellent score. Secondly, as the above poster alluded to, sometimes the perfect score is elusive and what the adcoms are looking for is excellence displayed in a host of ways and not perfection displayed in just one way. I think most recognize that there is precious little meaningful difference between a 750 and an 800. Hope this helps.
I had the exact same SAT score, with the exact same subsection scores. If a college rejects you (which is likely if you’re aiming really high), it definitely won’t be for this. You probably missed one or two questions because of silly mistakes. It’s hard to get into the most selective colleges with weak ECs, because your competitors will often have high test scores as well as great ECs.
If you’re planning on STEM, you must understand the concepts of variance and sampling error, no? 750 is significantly different from 800 when talking about large samples. 750 vs 800 is meaningless when talking about a single student’s one or two tests.
Thanks everyone.
