76 In Honors Geometry - Drop or Stay?

Hey. I am a freshman from a very competitive high school in New Jersey (im sure your tired of hearing that line ha). Throughout middle school, every class, including math, was a breeze to me. To be honest, I rarely studied, procrastinated, and still got straight A's all 3 years. I was placed in regular algebra 1 7 and 8 grade because my mid term and final grades werent high enough :/.

I am now a freshman in high school and I was recommended to take geometry honors. Excited, I decided to do so. The dilemma I am in is because I received a 76 for my first quarter of honors and I am unsure about staying in the class. I really would like to stay in the class and work my self up to a B for the end of the year. My main problem is that I am scared and worried I will not be able to. I go for extra help at least once a week because my teacher is often unclear and often wrong in her example problems and answer keys for hw. I recently got a tutor. My dream school is NYU stern and I am extremely concerned that a C will kill my shot at NYU Stern. Also, I want to be placed in Algebra 2 honors but obviously a C in geometry honors wont get me in algebra honors, nor will dropping down to reg geometry. So I either try my hardest in honors the rest of the year for a B and risk getting a C or drop down to reg and get at least a B hopefully an A. I really do not want to drop down but I am scared of getting a bad grade an honors. Any advice? Thanks!

The title of this reminded me of a song…cue the music.

Ah procrastination…that wonderful(?) thing that harms nobody until they get to the big kid world of high school.

Really, this is something you need to decide yourself…it depends on you…some people can recover from a 76 and get up to a B, but we don’t know if that’s possible for you or not. I think if you put a lot of time into studying and tutoring, it’s possible.

First off, did you try in this class? If you currently don’t study, do homework and/or take notes in class, I would stay and try doing these things. If not why do you think you are getting a low grade?

Yes, I did try in the class. Honestly part of the problem may have been because this is the first ever honors/advanced class I have taken ever and it would very difficult adjusting. I think I am getting a low grade because I can NEVER finish the damn tests she gives us! Scratch that, I usually finish, but I NEVER have gotten to check my work. So so so often I make silly mistakes that kill my grade! Frustrating thing is I get it in class usually and if I don’t get it on the hw, I get in class or w/ help after class. My main prob is im concerned I won’t be able to do better but I think I should be doing better!

It’s pretty much all up to you. We can’t guess if you’re going to improve or not in later semesters. Maybe you can get some geometry practice tests, and try doing those at home in a similar timed setting, like you would at school?

If you really think you can’t bring it up, I’d drop it. A B in a standard class looks better than a C in an honors class, in my opinion, and they both contribute the same weighted grade.

Geometry is the devil’s course.

Geometry is useful skills poorly applied in the math world.

But regardless, it’s just the quarter grade–see what you can do to bring it up to whatever grade is satisfactory for you. :)

I had the same issue my first year of honors math. If you have the time study extra. Get some extra problems and/or problem sets from your teacher, time yourself as you do them and memorize procedures which will increase your speed. Personally I would stick it out (though I love math), I have found that as long as you don’t go crazy with over studying, some extra time preparing is very beneficial.

Stay geometry is fun!

I feel that maybe it’s just the course. What I mean by this is I know a lot of people (myself included) who were horrible at geometry/alg 2 honors class at my school but in later math classes (also honors) did a lot better. Well, right now, I can’t say the same with Calculus… having some personal problems in that class, let’s just say.

I think you will get a lot of people here telling you a C is the end of the world, but it is your freshman year. You can always do better in the future classes, and show an upward trend.

Do you feel you are a more algebra-y person? If so, future math classes may not be as difficult to study for. But that’s just me.

No one addressed this yet so I’ll say it…

One C in Honors Geometry won’t stop you from getting into NYU.

Stick it out, try your hardest, get the B. You’ll feel accomplished when you see it. If you get the C, you’ll know that you tried. If you drop to regular, you’ll probably be frustrated with how stupid most of your class is (sorry if this is coming off as narcissistic, but it’s true, regular classes suck, especially at a low level like Geometry).

Thanks followthereaper for the great response! I think I am going to stick it out and do my best. Also, thanks for everyone else’s replies!

I would not leave if I was in your position, and actually I was in your position my 10th grade year. I had this incredibly difficult teacher whom everyone pretty much hated. I was shocked because I had a borderline C in the class for the first quarter, and I usually breezed through math. Ultimately I stayed, but like 2 others in my class dropped to a lower level class. I worked my butt off, coming to school early, staying late, and asking for extra review problems. I finished with a low A in the class;however, I was much happier that I had become a better student overall. Now you don’t have to stay just because of my anecdote, but you shouldn’t give up for the sake of your GPA; for all you know this class could teach you a lesson way beyond Geometry
Oh and Geometry is indeed the Devil’s Math!!!
