Here's what my letter said.

more than 11,500 applications competed this year for only 1,000 first-year spaces...

that makes an 8.7% acceptance rate. Lower than harvard I believe. WTH?

lol. only 20-25% people choose to go there once either:

a) they get into harvard or yale
b) they realize there's snow in rochester

Harvard had an RD admit rate of 5.47%, actually.

That's the number of freshmen they want to enroll. Depending on Rochester's yield, they probably admitted 3-4000 students.

no, not unless for some reason it changed DRASTICALLY again. that's what happened last year. they were used to admitting ~5000 students but only around ~1000 enrolled. so last year more enrolled, and their class of 2010 is what, 1100? they wanted like 1000, but i'm sure they're doing more this year to keep it as close as possible to their desired 980.

but i guess we'll have to see...

The 1,000 number is the number of spots in the freshman class, not the number admitted. Last year, for instance, Rochester had 11,293 applicants, and admitted 5380, and had a freshman class of 1090. I know they were hoping for a somewhat smaller freshman class this year, but I would expect they probably still admitted around 5,000 or so.

that makes a lot more sense, thanks
