Prof. Wiki gets people through medical school. It can definitely get you a piece of paper acknowledging your affiliation to UPenn.

Penn State. UPenn. Aside from the tuition, very little difference.

except, you know, for actually getting people into those grad programs you're saving up for

Formerlyabcdefgh seems like another state school troll. Why is there so much Ivy bashing from people who don't know what they're talking about?

Think of it as a public service announcement: i'm trying to save high school seniors from paying a ridiculous tuition for an over-rated education. There are too many drones out there who read US News Rankings like it's a bible and end up making stupid choices that they regret for the next four years.

In this country, it's not where you go to school, but what you accomplish that matters. At pretty much any 4 year institution, your aptitude will fall short of opportunity. The so-called "elite" universities tend to have successful graduates because the graduates were smart to begin with, and in all likelihood, they would have been successful no matter where they went to school.

It is always amusing when people take so much pride in where they "got schooled". Last time I checked, "getting schooled" reflected an unfortunate position in a power structure. Tell me where your instructors went to school. Tell me where their instructors went to school. Penn State vs. UPenn ? If you're a PA resident and your parents are not filthy rich, your choice should be obvious.

Actually a former Math teacher at my school went to MIT, and the Sophomore English teacher went to UPenn.

Are we talking about high school now?

Well you did ask if [our] instructors went to prestigious schools. I just gave an example.

Why would it be obvious - U of Pa offers need based aid. You point out elite schools have smart people - the faculty is good in most schools but the students set the tone - the professor has to teach to the level of the class. Also you will make friends at U of PA and other elite schools that will help you "network" in the future in places that Penn State does not reach much. Are there Penn State success stories and U of Pa. flops - sure but on average the U of PA people do better, esp. Wharton. U of PA is now getting almost 10 apps for every spot RD - all these people can't be wrong and only you know the true path.

How about the rest of your instructors?

Current Math Teacher - UVA

Current English Teacher - Georgetown, and Wash.

Bio teacher - UMD Honors/Gemstone

I'll get back to you about the others.

(quasi) ivy league education
bona fide state school girls

damn it, why didn't i go

My favorite HS teacher (European History) is a Columbia grad. You can almost tell that he was educated at an Ivy League school from the manner in which he speaks and presents himself.

mengcheng, Are you from MD also ?

a lifetime ago.

when i was young, and foolish in the ways of the world

i wish some of my teachers were educated in ivy league schools or schools breaking the top 100. most of them are grads from our local uni. teacher quality--more to be desired

The teacher that changed my entire intellectual/academic outlook and essentially prepared me for college level writing and analysis was my 11th AP English teacher

he went to West Virginia University

I definitely don't think an Ivy League-caliber education is necessary to be a good teacher. If anything, it may be detrimental. It seems that people that are very book/school-smart are often bad at explaining things. Plus, such well-educated teachers may have trouble relating to their students. Most teachers at my school went to a state school (UNC, but still..) and I think they're wonderful.

UMD may teach you the same things, but being surrounded by a higher concentration of dumb stoners starts to eat away at your brain.
State school girls tend to have diseases.
You didn't go because you thought Ben Franklin could use your money better than a turtle.
