8 yr medical school admission critieria

Hi,

I'm a high school junior with keen interest in medical science. I am taking the most rigorous weighted courseload in my high school with an emphasis in science (straight A's). I have good extracurricular activities. I'll be taking either SAT or ACT and most AP exams this spring.

Questions:

1) I heard from somewhere that some 8 yrs medical schools admission require ACT instead of SAT. Is that true?
2) My school doesn't offer AP physics (only honors physics). I will be taking that course in senior year. Will that hurt my chance of admission as some have claimed that it's a must to have AP chem/bio/physics and math, and all AP exams must receive a perfect 5 score to have a good chance to get admitted to these competitive program?
3) Once admitted, no MCAT is required in the future, right?
4) Is there a good listing of all the 8 yrs medical schools and any insight into their admission criteria?

Thanks very much for taking your time to help.

What you are referring to are colleges that have programs where you can be admitted to college and then go onto the college’s medical school subject to conditions including that you maintain high grades in college. I do not know all of those colleges but their rules can vary somewhat including whether you need to take MCAT later and make a minimum score. Where they do agree is that you need to have high stats to be admitted to such a program but none require that you have AP courses although those will obviously help. None would hold it against you for not having AP physics when your school does not offer it. Go here for a discussion of such programs; the article about 3/4 down also gives a link to a site that lists some of the programs.

1) untrue
2) untrue
4) google and then mine those schools’ admissions criteria for “insights”

I found this one helpful:
google rowland heights ba/md and it’s the first one

You have to visit all the links to find out about requirements. You can check out the admissions stats, but it goes without saying that while relatively small, these applicant pools are extremely competitive. Some schools (like brown) don’t really seem to have ‘requirements’ for admission beyond do really well and they recommend you turn in the SAT subjects. I think there is also no required GPA in college and no MCATS for that also. Others, (one of the UCs?) state something like " you must have a 4.0 and such and such score and have taken all these classes". There are a few schools that state you need a 3.7 or so in college and have to take the MCAT with a certain score. I like that site because it shows you if the acceptance to the med school is conditional (either MCATS or the GPA thing) or guaranteed (just get in the program).

Keep in mind that if you are interested in medical science (I am assuming research MD/PHD instead of just MD) you want to check if the programs offer an eventual PHD option and it’s not just a mainly MD program. I haven’t researched this a ton so I would just be safe and check.
