80+ Units, can I do something to Double Major in Econ??

I entered UCB in Mechanical Engineering in Spring '06, took all the Math, Physics, and Engineering Graphics. I switched to CS in Letters and Sciences because I had no time, it was hard, and my gpa was not as high as I'd like (2.7).... Fast forward to now, I am almost done w/ a B.A. in CS (L&S) w/ a 3.2.

For better or worse, I did a LOT of exploring in college, taking a number of Bio and MCB classes about Neuroscience, Music, Buddhist meditation, African drumming, international studies, some history, philosophy, a few Econ classes, Haas business classes (Investments, Accounting) and PoliSci. I had a phenomenally enriching experience here so far and I don't regret what I did, despite I could have gotten more "degree-wise".

I have always been interested in Econ and now I see that I pretty easily could have double majored in Econ (I think) if only I'd learned before I got to 80 units. I am at 96 units right now, not including AP units (if you include AP = 121), and I only need 8 more units to finish my CS major. So, technically, I will have a max of 104 units, which could leave 26+ before reaching the 130-unit max, and you can even go beyond that, as long as you enter the last semester with <130. Theoretically, I could get up to 145 or so, pretty easily. That is 41 units!!

I am 6 classes away from being able to complete a second major in Econ (1 more year, or less, if I take summer classes), which is <24 units. How do I go about this? Can I just take the classes, do well, and then ask them for a degree (I assume this will not work because it's capped)? I know I will kick butt in Econ; I am very good at writing, I read The Economist all the time, and my grades in 101A/101B and Finance were all good (A- in those). I am also pretty good at Math and used to doing problem sets, etc.

I do not want to be a programmer or software engineer as my occupation. To be honest CS was always just a hobby and I never really planned on working as an engineer. I am very well-rounded and versatile, and I really have an interest in the world and its economic/business development. I realize now I want to do work as an analyst for a firm/bank/Apple/Google, go into consulting, or get a Master's in Econ or MBA, or JD/MBA after getting some work experience. I could technically complete the Econ major within the allowable units, but as I mentioned, they probably will not just issue a degree right then. The advisor said that I had to do this before I got to 80 units (Thanks for the help).

Any advice? I am reading that re-applying to UCB or another school in UC system with all this completed coursework makes me automatically ineligible......but I would really like to get the B.A. in Econ! I really think I could improve my GPA even further and make myself more attractive to an Econ Master's or MBA program should I choose that route in the future...plus, having another degree couldn't hurt!

Thanks for any advice...
