930 P.S.A.T Score?

Hey guys, I am in 8th grade and I just got my P.S.A.T score back from my school. I was a bit worried, as all of my friends got a better test grade than me. I got a score of 930, 450 English and 480 Math. I was placed at 75th percentile, which i can’t believe. What are some effective ways on improving my score? Any good after school test prep places that i could attend in Los Angles, CA? I was intending to finish health over the summer so that I could take a language or V.P class during my 9th grade school year. Any help is welcomed, thanks!

The SAT has three sections so comparing the scores of only two sections will be naturally lower. That being said, the “average” SAT score is approx. 1500.

So, here is the bad news: your score is a little on the low side.
But good news: You have plenty of time. The PSAT/SAT tests are designed for high school sophomores through seniors so the fact that you’re taking the PSAT in 8th grade is probably a good indicator. Also your willingness to work on improving your scores will be really helpful to you in the long run.

My advice would be to wait and retake it in your sophomore year of high school. I think you’ll be surprised by the results. There are also a lot of study materials available to you if you are interested (CollegeBoard practice tests/Daily Questions, strategy books, and even prep classes). But ultimately, you have no need to worry yet. Good luck!

^ The new PSAT and new SAT do not/will not have three sections.

OP, for an 8th grader that is very good. There is test prep available online like Kahn academy. Also, you can go to the test prep forum here on CC and look up the Xiggi Method and Silver Turtle Method.

Alright, thanks for your reply. I will take sat prep classes during my 9th grade school year, as I will have no time taking them over the summer.

You are in 8th grade and the PSAT is a test designed for 11th graders. I think you are fine. I would focus on reading a lot (for fun!) and taking math classes that are challenging but not overwhelming and I’m sure you will do well when the real test comes along. I would begin prep after you get your 10th grade results because that will give you a better sense of what you need to improve upon, if anything.

IMO, there is really no reason to take SAT/ACT before the 11th grade, unless you need them to qualify for a gifted program or for admission into a prep school.
