99th percentile verbal with 69th percentile math

Hi! I’m a homeschooler- pls tell me if you think I have a chance at any of the top ten boarding schools? Thank you!

There isn’t such thing as top 10, it varies dramatically from list to list. Other than that, SSAT really isn’t everything; there are so many other factors that affect the final decisions that merely giving an SSAT score isn’t going to help. There’s a reason why schools ask for other things (e.g. EC’s, interview, teacher recs, grades).

A 99th percentile could mean two things. 1, that you’re good at English, or 2, that you’re good at memorisation. This is where your reading score plays in. If it does so happen that you have a very high score in both reading and verbal, you should play to that. Tell them how passionate you are about reading, or writing, or language in general, and talk about how your maths scores aren’t perfect, but you are trying your best to improve.

@gr8flkid Your score will certainly affect your chances. When someone is either homeschooled or from an unknown school, the scores validate the rigor of your curriculum. your scores indicate that you are weak at math or havent had rigorous enough math yet. @altablue there are certainly top schools that are recognized over and over to be the top schools The list of top 10 to 15 schools doesnt really change too much. @gr8flkid you do not want to be telling schools how passionate you are about reading–as though that explains your scores. I suggest you assess your own math coursework and identify where any gaps exist relative to the SSAT math. If you can pinpoint areas that you need to work on or subjects you havent had, that gives you something to work on and to discuss in interviews. Lastly, I would spread your applications to a broader pool. A 69% in math is going to affect your chances at a top school unless you offer geographic diversity or you are a minority.

I really appreciate your answers. I do love English but sciences too. My math was so rigorous, I went back to square one (and I mean that literally) to improve (before ever learning that prep schools exist) and am only now getting up to level (after my first ssat). I will be ready for the next test! Thank you @Altablue! Thank you @Center! P.s.@Center, I am both.

well, I wish you the best of luck!
