i’m in 9th grade and i plan to take act this december
but my reading sucks and it’s what’s bringing my composite score down. (I’m better at Math and Science)
I usually score around 30 (composite score) in the practice tests, but my reading has never been higher than a 29 (in which it is usually in the twenties).
A 30 is a terrible score, and I want to get at least 34-35 as my composite.
So, any tips on improving on reading and the whole act test in general?
Thanks!
Let us know if there is a book can turn things around in less than 3 months.
What’s the advantage to get high score in 9th grade compared to a 10th or 11th grade student?
you seem to know 34 is not easy for you, why not wait for a year?
But my parents want me to get at least 34-35
It’s too early to be taking the ACT. Do practice tests and read a lot (just for fun). You are much more likely to hit the 34 after more academic courses under your belt too.
i don’t have the stat, I guess 9th grade or younger ACT taker are less than 25%, that means 75% takers read more than you, take more advance English courses than you. English is no Math. For math, i am not surprised more kids can get 34 in lower grade (like your situation), Few kids start Algebra 2/pre-cal in 9th grade, fewer kids start AP Cal in 9th grade but I hardly heard 9th grader start advanced or AP english.
I don’t mean to discourage you. I only suggest you to do step by step. Try the test is fine, but hope for something you already know is hard, start to be realistic. Good luck to your Dec ACT
I am currently taking Algebra II and Pre-AP English I.
The key to nailing the ACT Reading section is to make sure that every answer you pick is supported by a line from the passage. If an answer just “sounds” right, it probably isn’t. Obviously this is hard to do when you’re crunched for time. I recommend trying to annotate the passages as you read them. It will probably feel awkward at first, but the more actively you read, the easier it will be for you to locate specific lines in order to support your answers. Let me know if you have any more questions.
34-35 is kinda difficult for short span of reviewing but if you will give your best and focus on reading passages its not possible
Once you get through a larger chunk of high school you will be better able to analyze and comprehend readings. Time will help, and you have plenty of it! For any student a 30 is great!!! This is a major accomplishment as a Freshmen, considering the national ACT average for juniors/seniors is a 23.
If you want quicker results try changing strategies and timing. Spend 3 or less minutes reading each passage and don’t spend more than 5-6 minutes answering questions. ACT answers are usually found directly in the passage. Other than that vocabulary and understanding the theme/point of a passage is helpful. Try practicing those skills and timing. To read faster try underlining things as you go to keep yourself paced and physically moving through the passage.
Good luck!
