It was nice to see UW in top 10 Best Values in Public Colleges 2009-10.
Most people who are not familiar with UW are fooled by high acceptance rate (62%). Those of us who live in Washington State are fortunate to have a university like that in our state.

But it sucks for us out of state kids.
Over $35,000 a year
[though I’ll quickly get over it if they accept me ;)]

Here is another ranking to make out-of-staters feel better. I think ARWU rankings are more accurate than USNWR. Look where some lower ranking Ivys like Brown stand. Makes you feel better? :)

14th place? Holy smokes.

Yes! This is how rest of the world thinks of UW.

Look at UW’s [rank for clinical medicine and pharmacy](http://www.arwu.org/ARWUFIELD2009MED.jsp).

Here is a list of Washington colleges and the percent enrollment from out of state.

Do people really use the college rankings?

I think college rankings are helpful if you take the time to understand the criteria used. It is helpful to focus on a few colleges during application season.

For me, academic standing and cost are most important factors. From a Washington State resident’s perspective it feels good that the university I can attend is ranked high academically and is seen as best value.
