My teachers have said that a 4 = a 5 in terms of college credit for my instate schools (ASU, U of A, NAU), but are there some colleges that will only give credit for a 5 in chemistry? If so, which ones?

I got a 4, which I'm proud of but just wondering how that may limit me.

Some universities such as Ivies do not give credit for it or require a 5. I know that Stanford only gives credit for a 5.

Almost all colleges that give credit for 5’s on AP Chem also give credit for 4’s with the exception of very top colleges, e.g. Ivies, as PunjabX mentioned.
There are colleges that give different amounts of credit for different scores; Carnegie Mellon is one.

Okay. I’ll look in to each college I’m thinking about applying to and see what their policy is.

Will a 4 on the AP Chem exam look bad to those top colleges that only offer credit for 5’s?

AP scores really only count for class credits, not for admission. And if you do not want to take gen Chem most colleges will let you test out of gen chem without using your AP score

^That isn’t really true. AP classes are supposed to be at the level of college classes, so if you are getting 5s in these then you should be able to handle real college classes.

High tier colleges use sat 2 test scores for admissions, since you should only take sat 2 tests in subject areas that interest you. Since AP tests are not mandatory part of an application, colleges generally do not use them for application purposes, however they can decide a tiebreaker situation when comparing candidates.

I don’t think that anyone would really be able to provide you with a solid answer without doing a lot of research. It really is better if you look up the AP credit policies for each of the schools that you’re interested in.

Off the top of my head, the only schools that I can name that would not give you credit for your score are Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, Cal Tech, and Vanderbilt.

Penn only accepts 5s

Brown accepts a 4 and 5 for placement. :)
