a 5?

will my getting a 5 on an ap test compensate my b in the class? i love ap us. it's just i don't really have the time to actually study in depth.

What do you mean by 'compensate'?

A 5 on the AP test doesn't mean that colleges will ignore your B and pretend you got an A. Standardized tests and grades measure somewhat different things; tests measure your ability to do well in a short amount of time (proficiency), while grades measure your ability to work consistently for a long period of time.

That said, a 5 will help make your B look better. Obviously a high test score will make you look good; that's common sense and pretty much goes without saying. However, especially if you're applying to top-tier universities, test scores don't 'compensate' for your long-term grades.

yea, what jimmyeatworld said...

you shouldn't actually say "compensate". a 5 will be make your app nice though. a 5 (acid) and a "b" (b for base) will neutralize themselves. it'll give you a ph of 7 (a neutral solution)

tthat has got to be the corniest science joke I've ever read....

lol

to get technical, it depends if you have strong or weak acids and bases, if you react a strong acid and a weak base, you will still have a weak acid present, not necessarilly a pH of 7...

What does this mean?

If you take Calculus BC, and it is hard as hell at your school, nobody gets an A... (Strong Acid) and then you get a 5 on the AP test (weak base), you will still not have as strong of a transcript as a person that has a A and a 5, but you will be in better shape than you would without a 5.

:)

Moderators, please...

hahaha......

Ask your teacher. My AP Chem teacher said that he woud fix our grade to an A if we got a 5 on the exam. However, he's the only teacher who said that. NO other AP teacher is doing that. If you're lucky the teacher might change it.

How do you expect to get a 5 if you're not willing to make the sacrifices you need to so you can 'study in depth'. The grade in the class is supposed to predict your grade on the test, so if you dont do some serious studying, you can probably expect a 4.

Which is nothing to feel bad about. But it is a B grade.

enearly everyone gets an A in my AP chem class. and nearly no one does their homework. only half the class tries.

just wanna make the point that grades don't show a great deal. :-P

wouldn't getting a 5 yet a B tell the adcoms that the class is a hard class? (i'd like to think so, at least.)
but then, getting a A+ yet a 4 (or lower) would tell you that the school (or the class) has grade inflation or the sort

"wouldn't getting a 5 yet a B tell the adcoms that the class is a hard class?"

Or that you're a smart kid but don't have the work ethic to see your grade all the way through.

I'm speaking in general terms, not in reference to anyone specifically

The Chem AP test in specific has an easy curve, a raw score of 50 out of 75 on the MC's puts you in the range for a 5....

colleges probably know that.
