A few years ago another NY Times reporter spent a year at Wesleyan and produced a book called “The Gatekeepers”.

Pretty interesting. Something people around here need to watch and understand- it shows how it’s not just a system of points, there isn’t a rubric. They aren’t sitting there docking points for typos on your essay or one little B- in your senior year; they are truly reviewing your ENTIRE application, an a very holistic way and subjective way. There is no formula.

SDonCC, that was a great piece of information. Thank you so much for sharing!

Very insightful. “Relax a little bit. Put yourself out there. Let the chips fall where they may.” May not be what one wants to hear, but it may be very sound advice.

One question: do universities have an exclusive comittee for evaluating international applications?

I saw the piece on the Today Show and I thought it was good.

I hope its like this at all schools.

That would be the guy who publishes on this blog and interviews in the video.

That only added to what I’ve heard whispers of to be honest. I can only hope that what seemed to be the case is actually true. I totally advocate working extremely hard in school and getting as close to perfect grades as possible. Unfortunately, this didn’t really work for me the past few years. I’m really hoping that my essays will show that at least I tried hard despite my weaknesses. It’s just difficult in this day and age.

Definitely an interesting look into the process.
