I don't really understand how we can "chance" people in getting into schools. For the most part, colleges accept people that they feel would "fit" in with the ascetic of said university or college based on what they think, not us. I understand that colleges uphold certain standards pertaining to test scores and grades, but past that how can we really say what somebodies chance is over another. Just another curios question from an overly stressed HS senior.

You are right. We can’t chance people accurately; but based on statistics, we can say if students are in the running for a seat at a certain school or if they are really lacking in certain departments.

In most cases, these Chance threads are done by people just looking for a little reassurance.

What chance threads do offer: an evaluation of one’s “soft factors” (ie, ECs) from an outside perspective; an evaluation of stats and how they stack up against other top applicants; anecdotal evidence, which is especially helpful from counselors or from in-staters regarding state school admissions.

What chance threads don’t offer: actual chances.

Aren’t we all searching for security and reassurance in life?

Great name and great post iFAILatSAT. Totally agree. I think the ultimate absurdity though results from people saying chance me and I’ll chance you…? Hows that going to work if you can’t chance yourself?

Personally, I made my chance thread to see if I’m in over my head. Obviously the answers aren’t going to be 100% accurate, but if everyone says I’m in over my head, I probably am. I personally can’t chance myself because it’s easy for me to find excuses for myself or tell myself something matters more than it does. We all think we’re better than we are, so other opinions will hold that off. I chance back assuming the people making that thread have the same personal bias.
