<li><p>Look up the gen eds. You’re going to have to be familiar with them. It’s an easy search.</p></li>
<li><p>Maybe. You’ll need to look up what sorts of art courses the dept offers that are painting related. If you want to pursue it as a part-time thing, I would declare an Art major right off the bat. Registration for art classes is restricted to majors in some instances (or seats are reserved), so if you declared it your first year (when no one cares at all what you major in), you could get through the intro classes. You could then drop the major whenever you wanted to. </p></li>

<li><p>There are a good deal of gen eds from all different areas, but most of these fall in the humanities. If you come in with AP credits, you could knock a good deal of them out. For example, I took AP bio and never had to take a science class. They aren’t like “you must take math 116, 310, and 480,” but they are categorized, like “quantitative intensive” or “communication intensive” and you have some flexibility in what you take. I also recommend looking them up… there is a lot of valuable information easily found online. My guess is you might have to take one science and math if you don’t have any AP credit. Not a big deal.</p></li>
<li><p>It’s actually pretty hard to get into art classes if you aren’t an art major. I took a first year seminar art class and I loved it, but art classes are small and they are scheduled in 3 hour blocks, so it is hard to fit them into your schedule unless you’re an art major. However, Chapel Hill and neighboring Carborro are really artsy places and there are a bunch of local studios where you could work or take classes. You should look into The Art Center in Carborro, it’s just a bus ride or a 40ish minute walk from campus and they have a lot of classes that are pretty reasonable. I was in a similar position as you and I have taken pottery classes here. They also have open studio times. </p></li>
<li><p>People talk about it a lot, but I don’t think it’s out of control. UNC is starting a new thing on their transcripts that show what a typical GPA would be with classes similar to yours for employers/whoever to compare. </p></li>

The only time I have felt like people were acting competitively was in a creative writing class, which is because once you get past a certain point in the CR program they only accept so many people. But generally, you’re not going to be dealing with suck-ups or people trying to sabotage your final project by spilling Red Bull on your laptop. </p></li>
<li><p>Very easy… they always seem to be recruiting. It depends a lot on the team. My roommate did ultimate frisbee and she loved it. I think it was a couple days a week.</p></li>
