A C during undergrad

Hi,

I’m a rising sophomore at a college in the US, and this past semester, I did not do so well in a proof-based math course (related to my major) and got a C. It was my first time encountering proofs, and I struggled a lot even though I tried hard but ended up with a not so satisfactory grade (but at the end, I learned a lot.). I want to purse a PhD in one of the top-tier grad schools. In other courses(both major related and not), I’ve been doing pretty well (I’ve also been involved in school activities such as honor societies etc) and plan on doing research too. I have to & will take more proof classes in the future, so if I improve in those classes, will I be fine? Will this C lower my chances of getting into top-tier grad school?

Thanks for your help.

My daughter had both a C and a W on her undergrad transcripts and was accepted to every grad school to which she applied (all top tier.)

Just concentrate more on learning material than getting tippy top grades and you’ll be fine.

Can you re-tale the class.?

I wouldn’t bother retaking the class for a C. Move on, and do well in higher-level math classes. One C isn’t going to destroy your chances.

@marlene @moooop @juillet Thanks for your comments/advice. This class is one that is known to be a struggle to a lot of students is a class that a number of them retake, not because they got a C in it but more because they got a D or lower so they just want to pass so that they will be able to take advanced courses in the future. @moooop, do you still recommend retaking the course?
