A cappella at brown

How difficult is it to get into some of the a cappella groups at Brown? I haven’t had any voice lessons, and the last time I took chorus was in 7th grade. But there have to be some groups that are less selective than others. Can anyone, current students especially, name some female groups and their selectivity?

I'm interested in knowing as well.

I wish I could sing...

That would be fun :)

i think brown has more a cappella groups that any other ivy. here are some of them. some are very selective (derbies, jabberwocks, chattertocks). others, don't even require an audition (encore). and then of course there is every thing in between, each with their own personality.

Yale has, by far, the most a cappella groups of any Ivy -- probably the most of any college in the country.

Agreed that it's not easy to get into the Chattertocks. Historically, they have been the best of the female groups at Brown, but that doesn't mean you can't have a great experience in the other groups. Is there a reason you're looking for a female group rather than a co-ed?

D-circle is a member of the administration at Brown, and is given to overstatement in all matters related to the University.

Was your sister in one of these groups, Hanna?

No, my sister sang in the classical choir and had a great time musically and socially.

Hanna, I'm open to co-ed as well. I really have no idea what it takes to get into some of these groups...I'd simply like to do it for fun while I'm at Brown.

dcircle is a student at brown, and although i'm not positive about the greatest number of a capella groups (hence the "i think"), it's a commonly stated conception on campus. out of curiousity, can you back that up? how many does yale have? if it's true, i'll stand corrected and tell everyone else around here...

the number of a capella groups isn't necessarily a good thing, either. it dilutes the talent pool so although certain groups are outstanding, they could theoretically be better if they were solely made up of the best singers.

just when i was wondering where bylerly had run off to

I do think Yale has more, but Brown has a lot.

I probably would prefer coed to all-male, but I would prefer an all-male group with music I really liked to a coed with music that I didn't like.

I will def. try out when I arrive in the fall.

Always watching your tendency to exaggerate, Mr. Committee on University Resources. Does your boss know what you do here?

Byerly: you, of all people, should not be criticizing someone for excessively supporting a school.

i have a boss? you must know something i don't. is my boss one of my professors? ...a fellow student? ...a colleague on a university committee i volunteer my time on?

i'm a student. you're an old man who has long since graduated. i think the fact that you spend your time attacking me with contentious half-truths is sad.

furthermore, i don't understand why my desire to promote a school i love irks you so much. as another poster pointed out, you of all people you should understand my motivations. (i'm sure most readers of these forums know where i'm coming from, and judge my posts accordingly). unlike you, however, i do not manipulate data, purposely mislead, or disparage other people and their schools in the process. maligning me is a case in point.

have all the pride in your alma matter that you want byerly. just don't use it as a license to attack others.

"Promote" all you want, just don't give a false impression of reality and pretend to speak for the administration when you're not. If you think noting your occasional "tendency to exaggerate" is an "attack" then you are pretty sensitive indeed.

byerly: you exaggerate about Harvard, so calm down.

Where have I ever "exaggerated"? And when have I ever pretended to speak for anyone but myself?

Ha Ha

I know dcircle personally, and he's not a member of the administration. I imagine that someday Brown would love to hire him as a dean (because he's a great advocate for the university), but he's still a bit young to be as important as you seem to think he is Byerly.

On a related topic, Byerly, I'm curious: are you NYCFan, the Harvard troll from the XOXO-HTH and PR message boards? The rumor is that you and NYCFan are the same person.

I didn't say he was that important, but he's tried to "pull rank" at times in re the "Committee" on which he's a student rep.. That's my main problem with him. I know who he is, also. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being an enthusiastic advocate, and I applaud him for it. I'm a great fan of Brown, myself.

lol, is there any doubt that they're the same person? Whenever news of any import to certain statistic-obsessed posters pops up, the same thread with the exact same title appears on both CC and x o x o h t h

byerly, you have an very limited capacity to cope with being corrected.

i invoked the name of the committee once, many months ago, to point out an inaccuracy in one of your posts. ever since, you've harped on my URC membership...unable to get over the fact that someone called you on being wrong

bylerly is indeed a great fan of Brown...he's also a fan of NYC (evidently)--so much so that he created a moniker with a ficticious PR stats profile. but of course falsely representing himself as a student (a member of the class of 2007!) doesn't preclude him from speaking for anyone but himself
