a car?

i am an intl transfer, and my parents insist that i take my car to UT. "pretty cool parents he" jaja. is it convenient?? or would it be better to use a bike or even walk?

i do want to make it easier for my parents as they are paying for my education.

thanks.

im pretty sure that driving around campus would be really hard. and since UT has a pretty good public transportation you really wouldnt need a car unless you want to drive back out of austin.

not to mention that if you have a car a lot of your friends will want to bum rides off of you

@Borb lol

@bombazo I’m thinking about the same thing you know exact same situation … but I have family in Houston, and I would really like to have my car in order to be able to visit them… besides most of my family trips are to Houston so I think its pretty much of your choice…

a friend told me that I could drive my car around UT, but she never mentioned that it would be hard…

what about parking? would that be a problem?

I personally found the roads in UT to be really narrow and hard to drive around. I would only use a car if you plan to drive out of campus, which is usually (but not always) out of Austin.

I brought my car and I love the freedom it gives me.

1.) I don’t have to wait on buses and be a slave to their routes and times
2.) I can drive home on the weekends (way better than riding those charter buses for $40)
3.) I can go eat if I happen to be hungry at restaurants beyond walking distance and at any time of day/night
4.) I can drive to the greenbelt or any other place I want in austin or beyond
5.) I can drive to the grocery store and get groceries, idk how ppl without cars get their groceries… How do they eat?

Central Austin is a horrific place to drive. Avoid it at all costs. All the areas around the campus are very walkable and even a 5-10 minute ride on cap metro or the UT shuttle will get you just about anywhere you want to go.

if you’re going to live on campus; the price of an r permit is sky high. ($800-900)
if you’re going to live say at an apartment complex; make sure parking is included.

bastards will try to rip you off!

i have my car here and it’d definitely worth it if you want some sanity.
you can go wherever the hell you want and leave whenever the hell you want.

it’s convenient, i’d say.

do it. just be careful. and ALWAYS check the parking signs (i.e. No Parking, Permit Required at All Times, TOWING ENFORCED, No Parking 7AM-7PM, etc.) Don’t ever risk parking in a towing zone, you will get towed before you blink.

I won’t be taking a car for the summer term since I’ll be living on the campus so basically car is unneccessary. BUT it is very nice to have in case you wanna return home, or drive to places outside school grounds. Also from Houston, and it’s gonna blow not being able to drive home sometimes :(
