GPA: 3.78, top 10% in Bay Area HS, 7 APs and 2 Honors courses
ACT: Comp 26, English 24, Math 30, Reading 23, Science 28, Comb English/Writing 25
Fair amount of ECs: varsity sports, community service, working 16-20 hrs/wk, some awards, etc.

I realize that the Materials Eng dept is very small, but I really want to go for it. The CSU budget cuts have me worried too. Do I have a legit chance? Or just a pipe dream??

Thanks vballmom. It's actually the CSU GPA calculated for the application. I am applying to other colleges, but SLO is by far my first choice - which is why I applied ED. And not many UCs or CSUs offer the MATE major (ie. Pomona offers it as a minor).

I'm in the SF Bay area, so my service area would be San Jose State, CSU East Bay, SF State...

I'm hoping someone in the Eng dept (possibly a MATE major) will offer some insight.

My son is a MATE major (2nd year) at CPSLO and he got in with 3.4 GPA for Fall 2007, but he had a high SAT (1420 CR + M). For Fall 2008, the average GPA of ENROLLED Engineering Majors was 3.85, so your gpa is close. It looks like your "rigor" score should be pretty high with 7 AP and 2 Honors classes, so I think you have a pretty good chance. Your ACT score is a little low for engineering, but it's in range for CPSLO overall.

Good Luck!

P.S. My son loves his major. His MATE classes are always his favorites!

Thank you - that's great. I'm glad to see more positive input regarding the MATE major. That reinforces what I've already heard.

I'm hoping that along with the number of AP/honors courses, that for Engineering they look primarily at the grades/scores in math and science. It's basically English (reading/writing) that has kept my GPA and ACT composite down.....

Thanks again for your reply - it has been very helpful.

My son has around the same GPA (3.7ish) but a higher ACT composite (34) and is applying early decision for EE. No news yet, he's got his fingers crossed. He has a couple of safeties lined up including Cal Poly Pomona. I don't think anything can be taken for granted at CP SLO since every year it seems to be even more competitive to get in.

i also really want to get into CPSLO, but civil engineering school. i have a 3.4 gpa cumulative and a 1340sat cr+m. im really upset since i got a 4.2 junior year, but cal poly will never know that since they only look at cumulative.
im quite nervous, but its my first choice. i applied ED already but i would like to know if anyone has any input

Is it just me, or is dec. 15th taking forever to get here! I applied ed for architecture, and i really just want to find out asap. Hopefully it will be a goo holiday season!:)
