Should I even apply

Hi you guys! I'm here because I really really want to major in fashion design, and I really want to attend FIT. Here's the problem, im a senior in high school and I have practically no sewing skills. Im okay at sketching and I've used a sewing machine before, but I haven't sewn anything magnificent. I have until February but I really want to get my application in by the end of december. Or should I even apply?? I think if I work hard I could get it done... But I really want to get in should I just apply for a different fashion major like merchandising?? Please help!!!

DON’T “settle” for any major that isn’t your top choice! You don’t need professional-status sewing skills to get into FIT, they just want to see that you have basic sewing knowledge. You can go to your local JoAnne’s and look for the “easy-to-sew” patterns and make like two or three different things. If you don’t have ANY sewing skills you might want to start wayy in advance and give yourself enough time to make them look decent. It’s better to wait to submit your portfolio than to turn in sloppy work.

Oh, and I was at the information session today and they said that if you’re reallyyyyy good in one but not the other, they’ll cut you some slack. So if you’re not the greatest sewer, do the best you can, and make sure your sketches are on point.

Good luck!
