A couple University of Pittsburgh questions

“But I’ve a been a investigabator with my political science degree from WVU and my wife was mugged! 75% of all her friends were mugged or burglarized! There are bad people on the street! I’ve seen them on 5th Avenue by the “O”! They drive their cars or take PAT buses from the ‘Hell District’. Don’t turn down the wrong street, you may run into these bad people’s neighborhood! I know the school violates US law by not reporting things in their crime reports because they obviously don’t care plus, did I mention, I have all this investibagator experience although I apparently don’t even know the street layouts. It’s all smoke & mirrors and I’ll cast aspersions even though I’ve apparently never looked at these falsified crime reports. The campus is so dangerous and nothing like what anyone else says because only I know the truth due to my massive investibagtor experience and having lived in Pittsburgh for over a year. Oakland is filled with muggers and robbers. Watch out, you may fall into cab and end up somewhere that isn’t safe. Besides, I’ve never seen an urban campus where I don’t have to clutch my purse and Pittsburgh is a dying, lifeless city anyway. Pittsburgh is a toilet.”

Why anyone gives the slightest credibility to anything this tool posts is beyond me.

You seem to have some serious issues, you may want to get some care - because you are on the fringe.

I’d welcome anyone to re-read my posts in this thread, then compare it to what wgmcp101 (who seems very intrigued by my personal life), just wrote and I’m pretty sure you will notice a drastically different context than that insulting slur he just spit out.

You seem like one really bizarre person, I’m not sure what your hang up on me is, or why you seem so fixated on my personal background - but it’s wierd.

However, it just reinstates my original point. There are alot of wierdos in Oakland - wgmcp101 seems like a prime example.

By the way, you never answered me the question about what the crime states on Pitt showed, or how they “got me.” If anything they show that comparatively, Pitt is a more dangerous campus to other Western PA schools.

Also, when did I ever accuse Pitt of violating US law by not reporting crime states? You’re really going off the deep end. What I said was that crime stats don’t always include crimes committed off campus, and that the ones you provided didn’t show any parameters - which they didn’t.

I’m not sure why you and your buddy pandem are so fixated on the fact that I said the O was on 5th. You talking about two streets that run parallel to each other and are separated by one block, sue me. It’s clinging on to stupid things like that (and all the other stuff that you are twisting to fit your own argument) that prevent people from having clean debate.

I’m not saying that smaller LACs have nothing to offer; however, most professional schools (medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, OT, PT, Business, Law, etc) are located in or around bigger cities. At minimum, such internships are more plentiful in urban areas.

I’m also a fan of larger schools and attended one myself - ask wgmcp101 which one I went to, he loves to harp on it.

However, I wouldn’t dismiss smaller schools. We have a few very good, small private schools in Western PA that have an excellent reputation and provided a very good education.

Mercyhurst College, Allegheny College, Westminster, just to name a few.

I do agree that if you want to go for certain degrees (like many of the ones you mentioned), larger schools are where you want to be.

I picked a larger school because it fit my interests well (socially, sports, ect.).

Everybody, take a deep breath, there’s no need for insults and name calling–and I mean on both sides of this debate.

Personally, I don’t believe that 75% of the students will end up being mugged at gun point, but I don’t believe that the campus is an entirely safe place either–so caution and common sense have to be exercised at all times. All this is true when it comes to most of the urban schools, some of them elite, and hopefully something that parents and students alike carefully consider(ed) during the college selection process, especially if they come from small communities and have not experienced life in a big city before.

So if you all agree with this summary, I suggest we put an end to this exchange, which, BTW, has been off-topic for at least two or three pages now :)

Yes, PLEASE compare what I wrote above to the actual quotes of bigeast. He has indicted himself nicely.

The campus is SAFE! The streets are filled with people throughout the day and night.
Oakland is basically filled with students and hospital workers. Sure there are a few sketchy characters down by CVS, but most students don’t venture down there. It is like any city. Stay out of the sketchy neighborhoods, don’t walk alone late at nite, take the shuttle safe rider or call security if you need to. Oakland is a great college town with many fantastic opportunities for students. Pitt does a wonderful job keeping the campus safe and beautiful. The students love Oakland- the students love Pitt

Don’t ■■■■■ on this site…

My husband is a cop and if we thought for a minute that Oakland was not safe,
our daughter wouldn’t be going there. And in his 19 years of being a cop, they’ve
never called it the “Hell District.” I’m not sure what kind of “investigator” he was,
but he certainly didn’t have any law enforcement connection.

It’s a city people - you have to be careful. Just be alert. Be alert to your
surroundings and don’t put yourself in potentially dangerous situations. Don’t walk back
to your dorm alone after 10:00 pm.

I went to Duquesne in the 1980s (when the steel mills were collapsing and crime was much
higher). For those of you not familar with the area, Duquense if literally a few blocks from
the Hill District - unlike Pitt. When I had night classes (which concluded around 9:00 pm) I had
to walk from the Bluff down to the other end of the Golden Triangle (Stanwix Street) to catch
my bus. Was I nervous as a 19 or 20 year old student walking through an abandoned downtown
area on Fifth Ave? Yes I was. But I had mace in my pocket and I walked in the middle of the street.
No one was going to jump out at me from a doorway. Did I overreact? Probably. But nothing -
in all those years - ever happened to me.

Just tell your kids to be smart - be alert - and they will be fine.

Students could take advantage of walking escort services and shuttle buses to safely navigate campuses late at night.

^^^
I don’t think Pitt offers walking escorts. I certainly couldn’t find anyone at Pitt that admits to offering them.

There might be walking escorts, though I’ve never heard of them.

We do have SafeRider, however, which is a shuttle you can call at night.

SafeRider

Century 21 Real Estate ranked Pittsburgh the safest major city in the U.S.

Money Magazine ranks property crime at Pitt lower than any other city in the Northeast.

Don’t believe ■■■■■■. It’s a great campus

Hi my daughter will start Pitt in Fall 2010. Due to some mixups housing deposit was not paid by deadline, now she’s non guaranteed housing for “3” years. Does anyone know what her chances are for on campus housing? She was applying for the Towers Engineering living and learning. If she posts early enough in the spring 2011 what are her chances for on campus living in the Fall 2011? Should we be overly concerned?

I don’t have any experience with your situation.

My advice is to do this:

1) Create a new topic. You’ll get better answers there.
2) Call Panther Central and ask: 412-648-1100

Thank you. I’ll try that.
