Pre-Med at U.Pitt.

Right now I am a high school senior and I'm considering University of Pittsburgh for college. I plan on going to med-school afterwards and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the opportunites/programs at U. Pitt. surrounding their pre-med program.
I know U.Pitt.'s med school is supposed to be very good. My top choice school was the Univ. of Virginia and I applied early decision, but I just got deferred to regular decision. Basically, I'm not sure if I want to wait until April when I've already been accepted to U. Pitt.. Any insight/advice would be appreciated; ).

I'm applying to the combined program at Pitt. However, U-Pitt's under-grad for medicine I believe is also relatively solid, especially w/ undergraduate research and hospital service.

I know University of Virginia is also a very good med-school, so if there is a major hospital around the area, I'd imagine Virginia to be solid. Just my 2 cents.

when you say the combined program at Pitt., are you referring to the med school guarantee program they have for undergrads? thanks for the info.

Pitt's premed is supposed to be excellent and the med school itself is awesome. However, I don't see the problem with "waiting" until April, unless you just like getting it all over with now. My D applied to six schools and narrowed it down to Pitt, Rice and U Chicago, and got accepted to all three (Rice and Chicago early), with a scholarship to Pitt that she knew about in December. Nevertheless, she waited until April to see if she got any money from Rice and U of C that might make her change her mind about Pitt. She really liked Pitt best and she didn't get enough money to change her mind, so she is a freshman at Pitt. It was a little nerve-wracking, but I think she's glad she waited to make up her mind.

There are loads of opportunities at Pitt with the UPMC complex across the street. Plus they have lots of research labs doing all kinds of stuff. You certainly won't lack for anything if you decide to go there.

If it would help put your mind at ease, and you can afford to lose the deposit, just go ahead and send it in to hold your place at Pitt. You can probably do the same with housing (a nonrefundable deposit), just read the contract carefully so that you're not locked in if UVA comes through in April. Most schools have a date where they will let you out of your contract if you change your mind. Then you will be sure you have an excellent school waiting for you, and maybe you will also have a pleasant surprise in April.

Warning - those April decisions are agony. But that is a good problem to have, a choice!

waiting - yes I speak of the med school guarantee program.

mercymom- I wouldn't see the point of putting in a deposit, since Pitt doesn't expect you to commit immediately... I don't think colleges will take away your spot if you don't pay the deposit quickly enough (unless its past the school's deadline)

That's true, but "if it would put your mind at ease" might be a good reason for some people. My D didn't send in her deposit until just before the deadline for housing, I think, which was some time in late April or May. She waited until the very last minute to tell anybody anything 'cause she couldn't make up her mind and wanted to weigh her options, including financial, and she didn't know all that until April 1.

That's why I said I didn't know why Waiting didn't want to wait until April. But some people just want to get the whole thing behind them and that's fine too, if that's what suits you.

yeah, I will probably end up waiting until April. I'm just one of those Type A personalities with a complete lack of patience: ). UVA wasn't that much higher up on my list than Pitt so that's why I'm still a little unsure,if I do end up having to choose. But I have months to figure it out. thanks for the advice.
