A day at UCSD

jw and how was your transition from HS to college? (how compeitive was HS, GPA easy hard classes, etc)

yeah i wana know what a typical day at SD is liek too....

Can some current student elaborate on this topic?

uhh i would say that, for me personally on an academic level, it's just something you get used to automatically. sure, the lectures are huge, with sometimes 300+ kids in a class, but for my first quarter, i tried a little harder than in high school. pretty much, after the first quarter, you get the feel of how much work you have to put in to get what grade you want. in comparison to high school, honestly, i never had to read so much in my life. college is seriously about trying to keep up with you reading; it doesnt matter what major you are in, all you do for hw is read read read!

anyway, typical days involve not waking up until 30 minutes b4 your first class. you develop a special gauge for how long it takes for you to get ready + how long it takes to get to a certain class. then, you just go to class. i thought it was really intimidating at first, trying to get around on my own, haha, but you get used to it. hey, its really not a bad idea to find your classrooms b4 you actually have to go to them! and, always carry a map and your class schedule for the first week! trust me, i got lost.

but anyways, if your school days end early, you can find some activities to do like clubs/sports/jobs if you're into that... or you can go to the gym.. or you just chill in your suite. OR, since the weather is always beautiful in september when you move in, you can go to the beach yayy!!

honestly, until you get the hang of it, days tend to be too long or too short at times; but you just have to get adjusted to your own personal schedule and not someone else's.

it's just different for everyone =) just dont end up like me. i wake up for morning classes, then go back to sleep, then wake up for night classes! ah well, for any college student, naps will be your bff. no joke.

the main thing about academics is to not get obscenely behind in your classes. im talking like, dont go to class for a couple of weeks, or being behind 2+ chapters. it starts to pile up really quickly and you will die around 4th week of every quarter with midterms coming up. if you could do 1-2 hrs of solid hw a night, it should be fine.

wow, a lot of the above ^ stuff is unorganized and i don't say much, but ehh... it's a broad subject

if you have other questions, id be more than willing to answer them as poorly as i did for this one :o)

Are you in ERC?

haha wow thanks =)

yup, im at erc

whoa 1-2 hours of hw is enuf? thats not bad at all.

yeah..that sounds reasonable..but at erc how many papers per quarter do you have to do?

paperss...
mmw 1- no papers, but heavy memorization of facts (it's prehistory)
mmw 2- you write 3 papers... the first is like 3-4 and the last is 6-8
mmw 3- one giant 8-10, including many little miny papers you write for the big one (it's something like 3 research logs, a prospectus, and a rough draft) <-- hate

mmw 4-6- each has an 8-10... by now you get fed up with complaining about it and just do it.

ok so what i meant by 1-2 hrs of hw, maybe that's an underestimation. that's to keep up. but when midterms come around, it's like 8 hrs of studying, minimum. that's for me and all the science stuff. for an ochem midterm, i studied really... like 26 hrs over 2-3 days. time flies when you're screwed sometimes haha

Does each college have a different amount of papers (generally) due?

If so, what's the norm for Revelle?

Revelle has four 5-6 pagers in hum 1 and 2, one or two 7-9 pages in 3-6.

Each college varies wildly...

:)

How is sixth college, generally?

any info on muir?
