Mechanical engineering major with minor in materials science engineering here…It’s really all about time management. Right now I’m taking the maximum amount of credits per quarter which is 20. The average student takes around 13, so I have around 2 more classes than the average student. Yet, I have time to study for all my classes, maintain a 3.5 gpa, research, exercise at the gym, run, participate in 2 clubs, and hang out with my friends. You just have to be really dedicated to your schedule and don’t let anyone break it down

I smoke way to much weed to do this normal pattern but most of my friends do this…

7:45 - Wake Up
8:00 - 2:00 Class
2:00 - 6:00 Hang around/Try to do homework/EATTTT
6:00 - 10:30 Buckle Down on homework/Work out or do something active/ Seep

Weekends

FAC - Drink. Eat when your drunk enough to not care about spending money.

…Sunday
-Relax/Watch football/ Do a lil homework

^ Industrial of course. The hardest of all the engineering majors.

To answer the ops question. In general engineering is harder than allot of other majors but it doesn’t mean you can’t have a life. I am in civil, if you haven’t figured that out yet, but I also have allot of friends in other areas. There are definitely times you feel like you have allot more work than some of your other friends. For me this is usually when I have projects due or tests coming up. I usually am able to get most of my work done during the week and have most of my weekend for fun. Most of the people I know in other engineering majors can also do this.

if i’m not doing work, i’m sleeping
even on the weekends…saturdays i do work from when i get up to when i go out (if i do go out)
sunday i work all day long
there’s always more work to do/more material to catch up on
it’s brutal

There is time for fun, you just need to prioritize what you’ll be doing each day. I recommend “How to be a Straight A Student” by Cal Newport (really cheesy title, I know, but it is a very useful book) for study skills so that you can study smarter, not harder.

My life sounds just like yours epirote… and it sucks. There’s no getting ahead, just trying to avoid from getting f**ked to the point of resigning. I scheduled two hours for myself this morning for free time since its my birthday, but that’s probably the only time I"m going to get to relax all week.

This is only the case for mechanical engineers at my school though. All other branches have it pretty easy at this semester (first of sophomore). I think they’ll probably find though that they’re in the same position as us next semester though.

I’m just starting off as an ME while being in AFROTC which eats A LOT of time plus being in Society of Automotive Engineers (which is fun but time consuming as well) and still have tons of free time. I don’t get to go out for thirsty thursdays as much as my buddies but you can go out every weekend.

I normally just nap in between my first class gap from 10-1 and then finish classes and do my homework around 6 till I finish. Plenty of time to drink, have a social life, and dick around if thats what youre wondering. I’m only taking 15 hours just so I don’t overwhelm myself and I can get used to the workload but definitely going to up it this winter.

It’s pretty chill. Test time really sucks though! Engineering tests are brutal and if you want to do well you need to prepare a lot. It’s really not that bad unless it’s around midterms.

My typical day starts out with me studying. I end up getting stuck and realize I don’t understand what I am studying then I become increasingly frustrated. I notice my cat giving me condescending looks. In a blind rage I attempt to kick said cat in the face but miss and hit the corner of my desk with my shin. I collapse into the fetal position nursing my agonized shin. I remedy my pain by applying my bottle of ice cold mountain dew to the area in between taking swigs.
The pain subsides and I eventually return to studying. After some time a revelation occurs and I finally understand what I am doing! Like a majestic falcon circling the heavens my confidence soars to levels never before realized! Finally I am prepared to take my exam, neigh ANNIHILATE my exam!
I take my exam.
My self esteem is shattered beyond repair. I cry tears of self pity that stream down my cheeks into my open mountain dew like the flows of Victoria falls pouring into the mighty Zambezi river. I collapse into an inconsolable heap on the classroom floor in a near comatose state. The janitor has to be called to remove me from the building.
After some time I manage to compose myself enough to walk to student services and petition to change my major to business.

Let’s not get carried away Unless someone figured out how to sneak calculus into the Pallet Loading Problem or serious graph theory in Material Handling Systems, IE is by far the easiest engineering discipline. Alongside surveying those days now that we have GPS.

But then, I could do Plates & Shells or Prestressed Concrete calculations by hand back 30 years ago…

Transfer PetE bound student here. The 1st 4 semester I took about 12, 12, 10, 9 credits hours each with a 32-34 hrs job schedule. I took some classes in summer also so which is why I didn’t have to take so much during Spring or Fall. Took some online like HIST, GOVT bulls*** class that I can teach myself or that I thought were easy A.

The early stage was pretty rough… there were more classes to take, you might miss 2 or 3 days of sleep during a semester and might get 3-4 hrs sleep for about 10 days of the semester., as I got closer to transferring, there weren’t much class at CC to take so more laid back.

I guess it’s different if you don’t have a job. I worked 11am - 7pm throughout my school years, BUT YOU WILL GET TO LIVE YOUR LIFE either way. ENGR WON’T OWN YOU.

@ohmmygod … you’re writing is amazing … what kinda engineering writes like that?.. I would of never guess it was from an engineering student… unless u did change your major like you said lol

Assuming a stable mental state (i.e. you’re not suffering from some form of depression), you should be able to find time both to do homework (and attend classes) and whatever else you want. There is homework, but it should be manageable.
