Hello, I know this question is asked too often, but it would truly help if anyone can give me input. I go to PCC. A couselor there told me not to apply to UCB or UCLA because he said I would not have a chance, yet from what I gather from this forum and other transfer sources, I still might! That counselor's blatant and discouraging "no" really put me back though.

Here are my stats:
Major: English
GPA: ~3.55
No Tap
I've been taking 20+ units every semester.

I have an unpaid internship in the fashion industry... and although it has nothing to do with my major, learning how to create clothes is a creative outlet for me. I work about 20-25 hrs per week.

I have been voluteering for three organizations whose causes I strongly believe in. I spend atleast 20 hrs per week volunteering.

Hopefully, my personal statements will not disappoint.

So what do you think? Should I give UCB and UCLA a shot?

Thank you for your input!

One more note: I haven't fulfilled my math requirement yet but I will be taking Calc this coming Winter session.

Tell your counselor he is only half stupid. As long as you have fulfilled most of your prerequisites and complete IGETC then you will be competitive at UCLA you are actually slightly above the average accepted GPA at UCLA which is a 3.52. He might be right however for Berkeley. It will be a a reach to get into UCB but it is definitely not no chance in hell. Have you completed your prerequisites?

Apply...write god essays --- that is all that is in your control now.

Thanks for the responses!
Sigh... UCB will be a long shot but I'll try for it anyways.
I've completed all but one class for UCLA, and I'll be taking that in the fall.

Seriously, don't stress about it, English is in the letters and science department. So its not that competitive you should be have a pretty descent chance. The gpa range for accepted students is 3.53-3.88.

If anything falls below 5.53 then students are not considered at all- period?

No of course not! you just have to clear the minimum gpa requirement. Which is 2.8. Having a gpa below 3.53 means that you chances are low. But people can get in via amazing ECs or personal statement. Hey, I know someone that got into Cal's CS major with a 3.6, at bit on the low side for an impacted major, but guess what? he was the founder and president of several clubs and he had his own startup company in his home-country. Plus his essay was probably good.

student14x, did he get into the CS major taught in the LS dept or in the engineering dept at cal?

Not sure he didn't say.
