A few important questions regarding admission

Hi,

Regarding admission, does each of the follow factors play a role and how much?

Geography-- Is it advantageous to apply within California or from far away(I'm on the east coast, nyc)
Parent Educational Background/Income
Need for financial aid
EA or Regular

Basicllay Stanford would probably be one of the few top schools I will be applying to. My stats are pretty good, but I will post them after the summer because then I will have everything.

I love Stanford's atmosphere and the people. It seems really really nice, but is there any flaws I should know about? ;)
How is Standford's admission different/unique , than other schools?

Thanks :)

Legacy is the key, this is why stanford admission sucks now. you have to be a URM, legacy, geography places no part whatsoever and EA doesnt even improve your chances. You'd be better off at a place like Duke/Georgetown/USC maybe/washington university in st. louis

The key, IMO, is context. Are you first generation college student? Or are your parents professors at elite universities? Did you have to hold six jobs to support your family? Or was your family wealthy enough to give you private SAT tutors? Did you just come to America knowing basically no English, or have you always lived in the US? Were you from a run-down urban school in which 1 out of every 5 students gets shot or drops out? Or did you come from Philips Exeter academy?

All of these questions play a role in admission.

okay, thanks for the info.

I actually have a really harsh background, low income family. I worked my way into a top highschool where the kids are a lot better off than me. Hope that doesn't set me back though if the school sends a lot of kids to top schools. I'm also Asian but I moved to the US when I was quite young.

I feel for you Agrophobic. I too came from a really harsh background, low-middle income family.

There is a section at the end of the Stanford application that asks you to write about any extenuating circumstances in your life:

"You may submit no more than one additional page to tell us of unusual or extenuating circumstances that you believe will be helpful as we evaluate your application. Please do not submit a r
