Hello everyone! I am a junior Musical Theatre major at Pinellas County Center for the Arts, and I am extremely interested in applying for UM next year.

I just have a few questions.

First of all, I’m in Florida - so would I have to fly up there during the audition season, or do they accept recorded auditions? If so, are the requirements the same? I’m not sure how they would go about doing a taped dance audition.

Next, as for the dance/piano segments on the audition. Which of them is more influential on your acceptance to the school? I’m taking piano lessons at the moment, but I have no formal ballet training, just a few years of Jazz under my belt. I’m not entirely able to afford both piano AND dance lessons, so which would be of more use to me?

Also, how many students do they accept into their BFA program each year? I just want to know my chances. :)

I have a 3.64 GPA unweighted (4.35 weighted), and I am ranked 12th in my class.

Thank you.

Welcome!! I am going to say that I cannot answer all of your questions, right up front. I would suggest you go to the UMich site and look up some of the questions you have regarding DVD audition versus in person.

There are a few things I can answer. Typically, Umich accepts a class of about 20 students. The class of 2013 is 20, 10 girls, 10 boys, the class of 2014 is 21, 10 girls, 11 boys. I believe the class of 2012 is slightly larger at 24, all those offered spots, accepted. I think Umich tends to offer to about 24 to yield a class of 20.

As far as piano and ballet, both are important. Umich does stress the ability to read music and has a piano placement exam to see where you fit in the first two semesters of your freshman year. Ballet on the other hand is part of the audition process, so having knowledge and skills in ballet are important. Your other dance skills will be important as well.

As far as grade pt., again I suggest referring to the Michigan site. That will give you a better sense of things, you do have to be academically accepted to Michigan prior to your audition, but the audition is the most important in this consideration.

My daughter is a sophomore at Umich and couldn’t be happier!! It is an amazing program and Ann Arbor is a fabulous college town…I encourage you to look into it further, you will not be disappointed with the quality of this program!

I hope some of this information has helped and I wish you the very best in your college audition process!
