A few questions about being deferred

Does anybody know:
- About how many applicants get deferred?
- About how of those applicants are later accepted?
- Any tips on what to do now? (Besides get good grades)

I can only tell you based on past practice. Relatively few students get deferred-in the past less than 50. About half later get accepted. Rock the grades! NU has been very transparent about only deferring those students who are really close to getting in. For the vast majority of ED applicants they simply accept or decline them. Admissions is looking for you to get/keep those grades as high as possible.

Okay, thank you!

Momof3sons, I am wondering where you were able to find out that “in the past"less than 50” got deferred and that about half later got accepted. The deferred letter made it sound quite unpromising that many would be accepted “The admission committee anticipates offering admission to a small number of deferred candidates.” I am looking at other schools that accepted me, but still have my heart set on NU.

In a recent new article,
“some colleges deferred none, or almost none, of the kids who didn’t make it in via the early route. …Northwestern deferred just over 1 percent.”

The reason given was to not give students false hope.

I would say that a deferral from NU is a good sign. Don’t give up.

Thanks, just curious where did you find the article?

curious, in a recent year, my son was deferred and then admitted to NU. We found out that about 1/2 of the deferred students were eventually accepted. Maybe 5 years ago, NU did not defer at all from ED. Just accept/deny but they changed to defer a very small group who were truly borderline. It was made very clear to my son that they were looking to see mid-year grades.

It would seem to me that the letter from Admissions which you cite is worded that they only anticipate offering admission to a small number because they only defer a small number to begin with!

Let’s hope you are right. My 1st semester grades are decent. 5 out of 6 of my classes are AP classes. 4 have solid As and math a very high B. I will be sending a letter reaffirming my continued interest and two more recs one from this years math teacher. I am hopeful. I wanted to try and make sure I wasn’t deferred as legacy courtesy. The wait seems endless and as if there wasn’t enough pressure on finals before. Now it is greater than ever. Thanks for your reply.
