A few questions about Rice

I kind of decided to apply there on the spur of the moment today (I;m a senior in HS right now). It was recommended to me by a friend who mentioned it after I told him about how I'm really interested in traveling abroad/volunteering in other countries/etc. which is something I'm really passionate about. Anyone have experiences with this?

In all honesty, how difficult is it to get in? I got deferred from MIT today. Not trying to brag but I'm just trying to say that my stats are all around pretty strong, 2370 SAT, focused ECs, etc

Is Rice completely rigid when it comes to extracurricular activities you've done? I mean, if I'm going for engineering, do they want to strictly see that I've done 101 things relating to math/science or is it good enough that I've had 1 or 2 things that I;m really passionate about, even if theyre not necessarily math/science-y?

After looking at the decision threads for this years ED applicants, I saw how “crazy” the admission acceptances there were. Take a look at the threads and just see for ureself. what im trying to say is: Apply and hope for the best. You cant get in if you dont apply right? :)

Ummm Rice is a terrific school but it is most definitely not know for travel/study abroad. Its student body is quite small and only a VERY small percentage of people take part - larger schools (especially Cornell, which I believe is the school with the largest AIESEC presence) will have more people participating in study abroad and so will have more options available. Just look through Rice’s website…the selection of places to travel to is quite small.

Ripriprip, are you still a freshman? [EDIT: Checked your post history — apparently you don’t even go to Rice.] Because when you’re an upperclassman you’ll realize that there are a lot of people who do go abroad at Rice, whether it’s for a semester, a year, or a summer. I’ve had friends study in Australia, Egypt, France, Spain, Scotland, the Galapagos, Costa Rica, England, China, Japan, and more. You were probably looking at the list of exchange programs, which is not nearly as extensive as study abroad. Here’s the Rice study abroad website: [Rice Abroad](http://abroad.rice.edu/) You can search by country and term in which you want to study to see what programs are available.

JDong, I’m not going to dignify your questions about admissions with a response, because you’re a senior and at this point you can’t really change all that much about your application. Just apply and see what happens.

You don’t need math/science related ECs. I was an engineering applicant (accepted yesterday) and my ECs were all fine arts based. Just present yourself as you are, not what you think Rice wants you to be. Rice is very encouraging of students who want to study abroad, and they have a lot of outreach programs to serve during the summer months as well. As I recall from my Explore Rice visit, there is even a staff member there exclusively to arrange study-abroad programs for engineering students.

DD has a number of friends either going abroad this coming term or just coming back. (Junior year) Others have done summer study, some with scholarships. I think Rice is very friendly towards your interests.
