Can only help w/ Q. 1 – the answer is Yes. You actually get a laptop as an incoming freshman, which you trade in at the start of your junior year. That’s the one you get to keep when you graduate.

“For students entering Wake Forest in the summer or fall of 2009
Upon entering Wake Forest in the summer or fall of 2009, new and transfer students are issued a Lenovo ThinkPad. In the beginning of their third year, the student will exchange the ThinkPad for a new model. Lenovo ThinkPads that are assigned to Wake Forest University students remain the property of the University. Upon graduation, the student will have the option to purchase the ThinkPad or return it to the University in good working condition. Students exercising the purchase option will be advised of specific applications that will be required to be removed from the computer due to software licensing agreements.”

Yes. Freshmen dorm.

Harder to answer. I’d personally say “paid research” or RA (free dorm + $3,000 per year, but it’s a lot of work and definitely not for everyone). In reality, it probably varies from person to person. You’ll have a better chance at whatever you consider to be the “most desirable” job on campus with seniority.

Obviously I didn’t know that, DD, so thanks. My D is a senior so she’s keeping hers. I thought the only change in the program was that new students no longer got a printer.

Maya Angelou teaches a World Poetry class that is pass fail.

The new dorm will be awesome, there is supposed to be a bagel shop in it too.

I am an RA and it is a great job. roughly 3200$ stipend and free housing. The workload is not very difficult either, just some menial tasks and spending some nights at the residence hall.

BTW, I am curious why you are a fan of J.R. Towles? His star has kind of faded I think in Houston :)

WW, that is pretty sweet, i think I will try to be an RA after my freshmen year. my one question is if you need to stay in the house/hall you are RAing in?

Also, how popular is Ms. Angelou’s class? Is it tough to get into?!

And to the JR Towles question: I am a big fan of minor league baseball and I like to follow prospects. For some odd reason he was one of my favorite prospects a few years ago. it was an easy name to remember so I chose it for my username on this site.

Generally you spend about 14 week days and 5 weekend days “on duty” which means yes you have to spend them in your dorm from 5pm-8:30 am. You have to go on rounds (just walk through the building) and sit office hours from 10-midnight on week days and 10-2am on weekends. There is a bit of paper work too, all in all it is a great job.

Maya Angelou’s class is unique in that you have to fill out an application to get in. Everyone I know has gotten in.

I was a RTA (Resident Technology Advisor) which wasn’t too bad either. RTAs live in the residence halls and help with tech questions so students don’t have to take as many trips to the service desk (I hope the program will not be discontinued now that the service desk is moving to the library). We got a $3600 stipend but no free housing.

I enjoyed it because there were no “set” hours in which I had to work - it was just answering people’s emails and phone calls as needed. It was a little rough the first couple of weeks when I was in a freshman dorm, since everyone was just figuring out how to use their laptops/the WFU software, but after that it was manageable. And living in an upperclassman dorm was pretty easy, since people knew how to use their laptops, generally, by then.

Thanks for all the help again. Being an RA seems like a pretty good job. I will have to see what happens after my freshman year. One last question: Do you get to keep/bring home your university provided laptop during the summer.

Ahh, interesting. That is a terrible program, it is only good for the school because having the same computers aids with tech support. However, it was only innovative when laptops were not as ubiquitous on college campuses as they are now.

I guess it’s a cost-cutting measure, as I don’t see the tuition dropping. I wonder what they’ll do with all of the returned computers…recycle them for incoming Freshmen? Return them to the computer company?

yeah, i read that article about the new computer policy. that kinda stinks. i did not see anything to say otherwise in the article, but do students still get to keep their laptops over the summer under the new policy?

RA’s and RTA’s are probably the best jobs although if you’re in a freshman dorm you do about 4 times the work as in the other dorms. There are plenty of other cool ones as well especially if you enjoy athletics - either working directly with the sports teams or indirectly for the Deacon Club.

WF gifts the old computers to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public school system. My next door neighbor teaches in the area and has told me that they appreciate the computers that WF provides. There is a new model every year, so they are definitely not recycling them with the next class…

1.) Do you get to keep your university provided laptop after you graduate?

No. You get one when you come to school, and then you give it back after your sophomore year and they give you a new one. This new one gets turned in at the end of your senior year.

2.) What are the most desirable paid jobs on campus?

My friend works in the coffee shop on campus and she loves it. I have another friend who works in the library and he says that’s fine too. I haven’t heard any job horror stories yet.

3.) Are the new dorms they are building next to Collins Hall for freshmen or upperclassmen?
