All wake students get their own laptops...wow that's a good thing huh? Well, maybe it is for some... but I have problems with this program.

First of all, why don't we get options to choose whether or not to get one?
I already own my laptop so I don't see any point of getting one more computer. The ones you get from Wake aren't really the ones with "good tech-specs", especially if the cost is included in the tuition fee (it's not free!).

Secondly, why can't we choose which one we get?
I don't have any problems with Thinkpad hardwares. I just don't want to use Windows Operating System anymore. I am sick of all those viruses/trojan/malware slowing down my computer/supposed-to-be-anti-spyware being spyware in reality. I tried Linux, but its too buggy and too difficult to use without looking up wiki pages for instructions. I wanted to get a mac instead, but then again, what's the point? you will get a nice newthinkpad in few months. I wouldn't spend money to deal with three computers crying like newborn babies on my desk. You can get a mac a lot cheaper if you're a NCSU student. Why can't Wake do the same thing?

discuss...

It makes sure everyone is working on the same playing ground - they all have the same programs available to use, and the licensing for the software is already paid for (which can get expensive when it’s stuff like Photoshop, etc.) Also, everyone having Thinkpads makes the IS staff’s job way easier if your computer breaks; they don’t have to have parts for Dells, HPs, etc. in stock.

The incoming freshmen will be receiving the T400 with Vista, certainly a big step up from the computer I am currently using, but will not be getting printers; interesting.

Vista is cr*p…it woulda been better with XP Pro and then an upgrade to Win7 (or whatever next generation will be…)

IS has been waiting for a year or two (however long Vista has been out) until it was stable enough to go out on a couple thousand computers. They don’t like to give out new OSs like that right away, especially if it turns out to be really buggy at first. Y’all might get Windows 7 by the time you get your junior computers.

^^Sure the bugs are pretty much out, but the OS is still a big hog of memory and working parts, and a slug on speed. Office '07 is pretty cool, however.

It is easier for Wake Forest IS to deal with problems if the computers are the same.

So they can take more of your money when your computer breaks all the time, because they are terrible. I wish I could buy my own computer.
