So here's the skinny,
I applied to engineering, and have not heard back yet. I have to pay my way through college (supplies, books, computer, food, etc). I dont want to get into huge debt, and am thinking about going to a community college to help reduce the cost. I have heard from many people that getting a good education, especially at U of M, will pay off in the long run. if I do get in to U of M, is it worth the debt?

Depends. You will be taking the same classes at a community college as you are at Michigan. They will be easier, and they will be viewed as the same. You're saving a butt-load of money at a community college, and if you get A's there, you can just easily transfer to Michigan or even a better school. But, some don't like taking that chance, as well as missing out on the college life.

I've heard from friends in engineering that it really doesn't matter what school you go to in the long run. Although a Stanford or MIT degree will be helpful, initially, in the long-run going to Wayne State won't hurt you. That's at least what I hear.

I think the school name is more important for other majors.
