a free period aka study hall during [1st semester] senior year affects admission?

I'll complete all AP courses at my school except for AP physics. I stand top 5% at my school and have good SAT score. I'm planning to take a free period a.k.a study hall instead of taking a ramdom class. Do you think it'll affect an application/admission? [I've acknowleged that admission includes many factors, i.e gpa, sat, extra-cur, etc.]

please give comments....many thanks!

Not at all. I have 2 free study blocks this whole year.

colleges want to see that you tookk the hardest courseload possible. If you can handle ap phy take it! I know in my school if you take a lot of study halls, even if everything else is ap, they wont check off on applications that you took the hardest courseload possible. It also depends on what other classes you have. if you have like 4-6 other advanced classes that year, it wont look like ur slacking off.

in my school a random (non ap class) will lower ur rank even if you have an a in it, you might want to conside that is ur school weights like mine.

For me I'm in full I.B. Diploma. And my counselor doesn't really care about how many spares we have.

i think the hardest course load possible depends on the requirements for graduation...

do you already have all the credits you need for graduation? you dont have to take AP PHYS...u could do an elective that interests you..

i took 6/7 periods during my senior year...but i had already gone above and beyond the graduation requirements for distinction...

To answer your question, I doubt that having a free period your senior year will influence your admissions that much.

However, I would strongly encourage you to take physics. Your education would not be complete without it! At the very least, having taken everything your school offers might reflect well on you.

I had a free period, and I got into Cornell ED and MIT EA. Calm down. A free period is not going to affect you in the slightest.

However, it would be a shame (both in admissions and in real life) if you haven't taken any physics. It's far more useful in other subjects and in real life than certain science classes - named chemistry cough.

wow i never though something like this would get asked haha. guess different surroundings =. a free period won't do anything bad. when i was in HS senior i had a free period fresh, soph and senior year. i know plenty of other people in my HS who got into cornell with free periods, some even had 2 free periods a day. I found a free period very useful in terms of relaxing/ sleeping/ doing hw/ studying for exam etc. a period in my hs was ~40 minutes long. (total of 10 periods) school starts at 8, ends at 330. if that helps make a comparison.

I have quadrouple late arrival and I got in ED

10 periods x 40 mins each? wow were some of those labs?

you dont have to take AP PHYS if you've already taken PHYS (regular/honors)

depends on if you decide to take labs. labs are usually part of a class and is 1 period long, unless its for an ap class like chemistry then its 2 periods long. one of the 10 period is lunch so techincally theres only 9 periods of class, unless the person takes chorus/orchestra which might take place during lunch period

OP:

It depends on the rest of your schedule. If yoru senior year consists of four academics and one study hall, then yes, it would be considered a lite schedule and be a negative for admissions. But, if you have 6 AP courses + one study hall, no college is gonna care.

Boy, my daughter must be doing something wrong! She is an IB diploma candidate with 6 IB classes, 7 if you include TOK, and a college level Psychology course, gym/physics lab, and Band. No lunch and no breaks in a 9 period day. In school from 7:45 to 3:00 everyday with no break. It's ridiculous! I'd say if you can get a break, take it!!

AmbuItachi u went to Stuy mirite?

Yes, take the study hall. You can utilize it for ... studying! and homework that wasn't finished. They are grade-savers because if you place it in the right time slot, it can really help you out in your classes. No school on the face of this planet is going to scrutinize you for having one study hall...

yea did/do you? i dont know if the schedules changed since they seem to change a lot. i remember when i was there, they changed teh schedules and extended teh school day by like 10 minutes from 320 to 330 or so..
