A-G Requirement Predicament (OOS)

Hello,
The UC Application Deadline is fast approaching, so I’ve started to finish up my application and essays. However, I stumbled upon a problem that I don’t know if will prevent me from even getting my application reviewed. Basically, all UC schools require at least 2 years of foreign language. In my school, I’ve passed out of Madarin 1 and Mandarin 2 with a P Grade (Passing Grade) in my freshman and sophomore year because I went to a liscened Chinese School so the hours there were transferrable to my high school. The catch is UC don’t accept passing/failing grades and I was completely oblivious that they didn’t. I’ve contacted the UC admission office and the only thing they can offer was explain it in the additional comment section. I haven’t asked my counselor what do yet but I was hoping anybody can give me their advice or experience if they encountered this before. I guess it will hurt my admission but will it make or break my chances?

Actually, 3 years is recommended but you can satisfy the requirement as follows:

SAT Subject Examination

The following scores satisfy the entire requirement:

Chinese With Listening: 520
French/French With Listening: 540
German/German With Listening: 510
Modern Hebrew: 470
Italian: 520
Japanese With Listening: 510
Korean With Listening: 500
Latin: 530
Spanish/Spanish With Listening: 520
AP or IB Examination

Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Exam in Chinese Language and Culture, French Language and Culture, German Language and Culture, Italian Language and Culture, Japanese Language and Culture, Spanish Language, Spanish Language and Culture, Spanish Literature and Culture or Latin;
score of 5, 6 or 7 on an IB Language A2 HL exam

College courses

Grade of C or better in any transferable course(s) (excluding conversation) held by the college to be equivalent to two years of high school language. Many colleges list the prerequisites for their second course in language as “Language 1 at this college or two years of high school language.” In this case, Language 1 clears both years of the requirement.

I knew that but I haven’t taken the Subject Test and AP Test for Language yet. Even if I did, the SAT doesn’t offer Chinese for the next 6 months. I’ll be taking the AP test this year but I will only get my score after the make a decision to accept me or not. I guess the only way I can d now is mention my problem and say that I’m planning to take the AP test. Right?

Yes, state you are planning on taking the test and hopefully that will be sufficient so your application is not rejected. Of course if accepted it will dependent upon getting a high enough score to maintain your provisional admission.

Thanks. Just from more of a conservative standpoint. If I get accepted but don’t get high enough score, would that revoke my admission?

^ Yes, the UC system is not shy about revoking admission.

If you are OOS for California, are your parents willing to pay $60K per year?

Wow! You knew about these requirements back in Jan 2017, based on your previous posts.
Why didn’t you follow through?

When I was writing that post, I was under the impression that my Passing Grades were acceptable for the UC schools. I did not take Chinese III unfortunently because I couldn’t t fit it in my HS schedule, but I was planning on taking the AP Chinese Test. Since I realized that my Passing Grades are not accepted, the only way I can hopefully solve this issue is by writing under 'Additional Comments" and explaining that my Sunday School is an official foreign language school and that I’m taking the AP Test

The UC’s are impacted. There’s no telling what they will do for your scores.
There are other schools that you should have also applied to for admission.
