I'm thinking of trying for Yale as a reach, so do you guys think that I have a chance over there?
I'd really like to go to JHU, so is that realistic?

You didn't say whether you are foreign applicant or a U.S. one. If a foreign one, your odds at Yale are slightly under 1:34 (I'm being a little generous); if domestic, perhaps 1:15. Your father's income will count in financial aid considerations, even if he doesn't contribute a nickel.

Odds at JHU will be better (though not great if you a foreign applicant requesting financial aid.) They will also take your father's income into consideration in deciding financial aid.

You don't get in if you don't apply. You don't go if you can't pay for it. (In other words, look for some safeties.)

Yeah, I'm a foreign aplicant....
Any safety suggestions?
Thanx

You look like a great applicant! You might start looking at schools such as Brandeis, Vanderbilt, Lawrence University, Macalester College and Grinnell College that were pretty decent for internationals requiring financial aid during the latest admissions cycle. These would be matches, considering the finaid situation. Harvey Mudd College (great school, dreadful name) is also worth looking into. Good luck!

Do you guys think I might try Cornell? Is it good for internationals? If a college is need blind, does it mean that applying for fin aid won't spoil your chances to get in? Btw, which ones are need blind?

Thanx alot ohio_mom

.....bump...

If you are interested in the sciences, definitely apply to MIT and Princeton.

That'll be cool, but do you think I have a shot at Princeton :) ? What's more important do them, ec's or sats and gpa?

Princeton is into EC's more than SAT's or gpa since it's a very discussion and self-study oriented school (ie the preceptorial system) so they'll probably be looking at leadership and things like that.

I dont really have a good impression with Princeton.

A good friend applied for Princeton early, and got rejected outright (I felt he was more than qualified). In the RD cycle, he was accepted into JHU for biomed eng. He attends JHU now. Of course, we has not an int'l student.

Does it happen that you get rejected at EA, but would have been accepted at RD, or, what I'm trying to say, are your chances better or the same if you apply ED?

Well, the thing is, if you are rejected outright, they wont consider you're application again during RD. If your deferred, they will consider it "as if they haven't read it before."

Dashela, if you think you have a shot at Yale, then you have a shot at Princeton. Only your SAT scores will give us a clearer picture. Once you get your SAT scores, let us know.

shes already got her sat scores, scroll up!!
i think your SAT scores are great...especially since english is not your first language...right?
i think you have a chance at yale
answer to your questions: yes need blind means that they dont consider your financial circumstances. however, cornel is not need blind, and i think they are stingy with aid to int'ls too, just like columbia...

mini: since you said that chances for int'ls at yale are like 1:34, do you know the stats for princeton and harvard too?=)

I really think MIT is her best option.

It sounds as if you can get into a lot of top schools, but the financial aid is the issue. I would spend a lot of time looking at the financial aid statistics and policies for each school of interest.

Thanx alot guys, you are great! :)

i think you don't have a chance, i mean come on be real!
