I've been freaking out the past couple of days because I feel like I might not get into the colleges that I'm applying to. I have a 3.63 GPA and have just gotten a 29 on my ACTs for September. My rank is 31/381 and I have a good course load (by the end of high school I will have taken 7 APs). I have a REALLY good list of extra curricular activities as well.

Should I apply to more Safety Schools or do I have a good list?

My College List:
UVM
University of Rochester
UCONN
Tufts (My top school as of now)
Smith College
Northeastern
NYU
JHU
George Washington University
Fordham
BU
American
Syracuse

I may or may not apply to all of the colleges above. Are there any other schools that I should apply to? If so, which ones?

I'm looking for a Co-Ed 4 year university/college in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic

To me your list looks reasonable. Tufts looks like a bit of a reach with your stats, but no harm in trying. You should end up with a number of good choices so congratulations.

Thanks so much! I had an appointment with my guidance counselor, and she said that I have a slim chance of getting into UVM, so I should apply to schools with a 3.0 GPA or less, and that freaked me out.

This list looks good… although I am not sure why you have Smith on it, as you mentioned co-ed in your criteria. Maybe substitute U Mass - Amherst if they have a Latin major (not sure about that, you would have to check). That way you are still in the 5 college consortium.

If you plan to major in Latin you may want to do some more research on each school’s website. Northeastern does not have a Classics Dept. nor a Latin major. Some of the other schools you list may not offer that either.

If your school has a Naviance system that can help you see where your stats fit in. In my opinion, you have a number of schools more difficult to get into than UVM. Also, it was not part of the question, but make sure you are able to afford the schools you apply to – a safety schools should not just be an admissions safety, but a financial safety as well.

I know that Northeastern does not have a Latin department, but I’ve also been considering Film… which is why I’m applying there. Also, thank you for pointing out that Smith is a women’s college because I completely overlooked that.

Does anyone have recommendations for any other schools I can apply to or fit into according to my stats?

Um… if you overlooked that Smith is a women’s college, I am sort of wondering how you made your list and what criteria you are using… just on names alone or something?

Get a copy of Fiske’s Guide to Colleges and read up on each of the schools on your list. Maybe make up a folder or a spreadsheet or something with notes on each. Some key questions to ask: size, location, do they offer the majors you want, strength/focus of those majors, how your stats fit in (so you have some reach, match, and safety schools). Are there any key extra curriculars you are looking for? Look at each school’s website for the cost, and see if your parents will help you run the cost of attendance calculators. If there is an online video tour, take a look at that. It is late to do much visiting, but if you have a top few choices on paper, see if you can get to the campuses to see them prior to putting in your applications.

There is no substitute for actually researching the schools. Asking for recommendations based on your stats is asking for schools that do not fit you in other ways (personality, major, weather, rural vs. urban location, etc.). Students who use the method you are using are often surprised (and not in pleasant ways) with the schools they end up at.

What I meant by overlooking that Smith is a women’s college is that I forgot to take it off my list after I figured that out.
Also, if you refer to my initial post, I was asking if I should apply to more safety schools and if people could provide example of what schools I should be applying to based off my stats. Obviously I’m not going to apply to every school that people list, I just wanted to know which type of colleges I should look into. If I don’t like the school or fit its personality, i’m not going to apply to it. Period.
