A Greek that doesn't drink?

Hey Guys

So I'm interested in joining a sorority at Cal- my mom was in one and sisterhood and a sense of community really appeals to me. But I don't drink nor do I plan to. I'm not overgeneralizing and saying that all Greeks drink, but it is def associated with the parties and culture. Would I be out of place at parties and such if I'm the only one that is sober?

Thanks

this is the question that i had when i decided whether or not to rush. honestly, you may feel a little out of place at the beginning, but during recruitment, no one ever asks you if you drink. the majority of the greek system drinks, but there are varying amounts to which people drink, and all the drunk people need some sober people to watch out for them. i wouldn’t worry about it too much because the greek system isn’t ALL about partying. plus, it’s more fun to watch the drunk people engage in drunken activities anyways.

i had this problem before i decided to rush…but now, i’m in a sorority at cal and i don’t drink. many of my sisters do, but there are some that don’t…make sure that you join a sorority where you don’t feel that the girls will be judgemental, that’s my only advice. no one in my sorority ever forces me to drink or “socially isolates” me, so to say, because i choose to stay sober. the greek system at cal is a great thing to get involved in, and i definitely think you should rush! like the person above me said, not EVERYTHING is about partying.

ALL sororities drink and yes EVERYTHING is about the social aspects (partying). I know some sorority girls and they love to down play the whole hazing during initiation or the partying aspect but in reality it’s a lot of what they do. In their minds, it’s not really a big deal so they make it sound like that’s totally not what they do and lie to your face. I had the wool pulled over my face but having been here for a few years, you realize what they’re all about. Plus, it’s really socially awkward when you’re the only one not drinking, you’ll eventually cave to the pressure of having alcohol.

A lot of people come in with the not going to drink mindset but eventually they break that personal promise to themselves… never say never.

ummmm excuse me, i don’t know exactly which sorority you are talking about, because hazing is forbidden and we have an extremely strict policy against it. i have been through it and there is no hazing whatsoever. anyways, stop stereotyping the greek system with what you see on tv, because that is definitely not what it is all about…at least in my experience.

lol hazing is “forbidden” is the way it’s supposed to be. some sororities still do haze, but it’s a different level than that of fraternity hazing. What I recommend is what everyone here generally says, pick a sorority that fits you. Some are definitely more about partying/looks and others more sisterly. You have to disregard the tiers (or at least use them as a very very last resort) and just decide which house fits you.
And don’t worry about drinking at parties. you can totally get by without any alcohol touching your lips.

You can always try to find positions in the house where you are required to be a sober sister, or as other people have mentioned, find a house that isn’t judgemental and all about partying. During rush it can be a bit difficult picking out houses that fit in for you, but go with your gut. You’ll find people that accept you for who you are regardless :)

Addressing batman though, there really are houses that don’t do any hazing.

Plenty of women don’t drink in Greek Life, and it isn’t a big deal. Hazing is not an aspect of the majority of sororities at all–and if there’s anything, every sorority would respect your choice not to drink.

it’s hazing but not under your interpretation ;)
