Dad: Well one thing is for certain, and that is you are not a man of your word. So much for calling for a truce. Shame on you. Strike four!

Congratulations and best of luck to your son. I hope he picks MIT so that you can go back to that thread and leave the honest folks alone here. I for one have had enough of your insults, innuendos, shifting opinions (they change like the wind)- if you are an example of what MIT employs then I am glad it was not on our son's list. Honor is something that MIT will never have over USNA- and in the end its the only rating that I care about. Now leave Bill and these nice folks alone here and go away.

I speak the truth, not just what I want to see, and evidently not what you want to hear.

Oh well, I can live with that, and the Navy was just fine with it for 20 years.

Lighten up dude! Your making yourself look bad. :)

I couldn't help but get extremely annoyed with the last string of posts. I am usually one of those people who just reads the posts, but I cannot remain silent on this topic. What is the point of fighting over which school is "better"? Both schools have fabulous programs, but that does not neccesarily indicate which school will imbue their future graduates with the most tools for success. Every person is different and every person has a different learning style. A student who attends a community college could end up being just as successful, as a student who attends MIT or the Naval Academy. American students, their famalies, and even their guidance counselors have been tricked into believing that the best schools for every single student are the ones which can easily be slipped into cocktail party conversation.

When I was looking at colleges I looked at MIT. The Lemelson-MIT foundation had actually given me and a group of my peers a $10,000 grant, so I spent a lot of time working with people who worked at MIT, and I will say that MIT does have a great engineering program. But when I went to apply to schools, I was very hesitant to apply to MIT just because I did not think that I would be able to succeed in an environment where starting class sizes ranged from 100-200 students. I do however think that MIT would be a great place to go for graduate study. Every person has their own niche, and just because a school is on the top of this poll or that ranking, does not mean that everyone will fit into that school. As a child who has her own set of nagging parents, I would advise all of you to stop worrying about which school is best at engineering or the most honorable, and instead just worry about which place will make your child happy, and give them the tools they need to truly succeed.

ec1214- ah, out of the mouths of babe's! good for you that you are able to see the big picture. Best of luck~ I hope you land where you are happy, and successful!

One thing we must also remember is that the two schools have different missions. Nowhere in the academy's mission does it say to try to be the best engineering program in the country. It does however say to provide graduates who are dedicated to a career of Naval Service. People dont go to MIT to be a Naval officer for the most part, they go to be engineers. If you want to go to the academy the priority should be to develope yourself to be a Navy or Marine Corps officer first, because it doesnt matter if you graduate in the top of your class or bottom, you will most likely be leading people into combat. Just remeber this when making your decision, if the most important thing is getting a good engineering degree so you can be successful in the buisness world, then the Naval Academy is probably not the place for you. If you want to be a Marine or Navy officer first and want a good degree then it is. Dont come here for the wrong reason.

Excellent post navy 07. That's it in a nutshell. Thank you for that concise message which is relevant for all potential mids, no matter what their field of study.

well, now i really am in the predicament i explained on this thread. Harvard was actually crazy enough to accept me. so now, i have Harvard with NROTC-Marine Corps, or the Naval Academy. i'm not gonna start the school-on-school debate again, don't worry......but i am SOOOOOO torn right now......i never thought i'd get so far as to actually be in this position......i dont know WHAT to do. at least i have a long time to think about it, but still.....this is killing me right now. i love both schools so much.

Congrats Shawna!!!

tough decision, but its awesome that both are open to you!

Follow your heart- and keep us posted!

The general advice may not apply here.

To have a GREAT naval officer career, Harvard might be the better path. FIND AN ADMIRAL WHO YOU ADMIRE AND ASK HIM. Hell, I'd ask Poindexter. USNA, PhD physics Cal Tech (or was it MIT). By the way - asking for LEGITIMATE help is an awesome way to make contacts.

To have a wonderful naval oficer career, USNA may be the better path.

Harvard with an undergraduate major that relates to a military need such as logistics. 3 years in Falujah including getting shot in the butt guarding the candidates for the 2013 spring elections. PhD in operations research. Create just in time distribution system such that no grunt is ever without a battery when he needs one. Appointed chief of staff by the Clinton-Bush ticket of 2036.

beprepn

Or screw it. Go to USNA, you will make better friends.

Like anywhere else it depends on the person. It all depends on what you put into it. Just because you go to the academy and graduate from it doesnt mean you are going to be a good officer. Its all about how much work and how proactive you are to become that leader that can react under fire. Its possible to skate by at the academy and just do the minimums, but if you dont put anything in, you arent going to get anything out. Bottom line, great officers come out of ROTC and the academy. Harvard's lifestyle may prepare some people better and the academy may facilitate the growth into a good officer for other people better. All depends on the person. Asking someone who you think knows stuff is almost pointless because everybody has their bias. When it comes down to it you have to ask yourself if you want that military lifestyle all the time or if you want the regular college experience. Mids know how to party, there just isnt as much time available to do so. One little advantage seen from experience, mids are more accustomed to military life when going out to the fleet. On summer cruise with a bunch of ROTC mids, they were miserable having to wake up so early and being up so long. Just a little advantage to the military lifestyle, a little easier to adapt when you get to the fleet as a new JO

One other advantage I forgot are the summer training opportunities. Any questions about this ask.
