A Hard Decision

Okay, here's the rundown.
Accepted:
- Boston University ($15,000 scholarship)
- SUNY Binghamton (Still cheaper then BU at a mere 20k)
- Rochester Institute of Technology (Have not received financial aid)
- Drexel University (Have not received financial aid)
- Rutgers University (Absolute hatred to this one)
Waitlist:
- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
- The College of New Jersey
- University of Pittsburgh
Have Not Heard Back From:
- University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
- Steven's Institute of Technology (They should tell me by the end of the week)

I am majoring in biomedical engineering. I know Boston University is the top of this list for biomed, but there are quite a few problems.
Pros about BU:
Great program
Cons about BU:
Hate the campus
Hate the people
Have no friends going there
More expensive than the other options (namely Binghamton)

My "other options are RIT and Binghamton", according to my parents. I don't know much about RIT, so please fill me in.

I'm a female who does robotics, does not really get along with females (sorry but they can cause too much drama). I'm in chorus, I'm a photographer, I'm a lighting electrician in stage crew, so I'm pretty well-rounded. I've been dating my boyfriend for over a year now, and we've been best friends for even longer. He is leaning towards Binghamton. Not only that, my closest friends are also leaning towards that school. Now you see the problem? Of course I want to attend school with them and my boyfriend.

I attended a tour at Binghamton a month back. I really enjoyed the campus and I really liked how they're making a brand new engineering building that will open in the Fall this year. Thing is, the ranking for Binghamton's engineering currently sucks. But, it's their fastest growing department, and with their new building, it's quite enticing.
So, I ask you College Confidential, what do you guys think? Sanity vs. Great Program. Think I'll survive in a school that I don't necessarily want to be in?

Don’t go somewhere you hate just because the program’s good–you don’t seem keen on BU. Judging by what you said, I’d say you were leaning towards Binghamton regardless of your friends and boyfriend going there…however, it’s also possible that your desire to be with them is coloring your view of the school, elevating it and lowering the others. Really think about the school on its own regardless of your friends and boyfriend because you will change over the course of your college experience, not necessarily with these other people. I’m not saying “Forget them because you’ll break up,” I’m just saying try to think of it singularly, because you don’t want to be left in a school you hate if things don’t work out with your boyfriend/friends. I wouldn’t worry about the lack of friends at other places because most people go into college not knowing anyone and make friends–it’s a huge part of the freshman experience.

Just wait for Michigan to accept you and then go there :)

NO…Boston University (expensive, even w/ aide… no campus)
Big maybe…SUNY (are you talking yourself into this one?)
nope…RIT (FA?)
nope…Drexel University (FA?)
nope…Rutgers University (why go to a school you hate?)
Yes…UMichigan (great school, chance to get away)

Yeah, I do guess that I was leaning towards Binghamton, but there happen to be a few other factors that I forgot to explain.

1) I have no power in my decision. My parents are relying solely on ranking and reputation right now and currently Boston University is winning. The only way I can win is by getting good numbers in favor of the college I want. Suggestions? Numbers?
2) My brother, although he is 5 years older, is attending college at the same time as me. (He went to the Israeli army first.)

And I know the whole freshman college experience is to meet new people, but truthfully, I’m not exactly a great outgoing person who likes meeting new people. XD And I don’t think I’ll be changing much. The only way I can change is to become more independent, my other qualities are stuck to me like a leech. But I’ll think more into things and take my parents on a tour to Binghamton. Maybe they’ll see my view.

As for Recharge’s comment: I’ll see what happens. I don’t know much about UMich.

Also, any comments about Rochester Institute of Technology? And I keep on hearing from people that attend/attended Boston University that the people are cold, and when I visited there, I felt the same feeling…

BU is seems simply too expensive and most of the others you have not recieved financial aid. Whats your residence? If you live in New Jersey I would have suggested Rutgers (this one:[College Search - Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey: New Brunswick/Piscataway Campus - At a Glance](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)) as I’ve always thought of the school being great. Though you seem to hate it and appear happier at all the others?

I do live in New Jersey, but Rutgers here really isn’t that great. Trust me, all the BS they say about it being amazing, isn’t true. Either way, I’ve been knocking Rutgers off my list for ages.
Update for you guys, I’ve begun the convincing process for Binghamton, and -crosses fingers- I hope it rubs off onto my mother.
As for BU, the price isn’t that expensive considering that I got a 15k scholarship.

No BU is not worth suh a price. Though the scholarship is well since the school is known for giving little in aid. I could not suggest more further in how good of a school Rutgers is. But you seem to strongly dislike it.

can you tell us why you don’t like rutgers?? I chose rutgers over NYU-P, Drexel and TCNJ…
I just want to know why you dont like rutger??

Alright, I can tell you why I don’t like Rutgers, but please note this is coming from a bias opinion. It’s the school of people who could’ve, should’ve gone to higher universities, but were idiots and only applied to Ivies and Rutgers. Or the people who are idiots in the first place got into Rutgers happily. It’s an annoying party school, the STD rumor is actually true. The dorms are unbelievably horrible, and the campus is extremely spread out. Note I am talking about New Brunswick. You need to take a bus to get to your classes and it’s not easy when everybody is trying to do that.
Let’s see… also, I happen to be taking AP Physics with a teacher who controls a lot of the way Rutgers teaches, and well, I hate her teaching style so I don’t want to go to Rutgers and find, OH!, I’m back in my lovely AP Physics class. (You WILL have webassigns, and you will have TA’s.) I’ve always said that you get you want from college. So, you can get a great education, you can try and avoid the dangerous parties. (My friend Steve ate a closed bag of chips and found himself sharpied all over the next day with numbers on his butt even…) The thing is, I know I won’t do well in a school that I just don’t like at all. Plus, my family is close by and there’s a threatening option of me having to live at home. So yes, it’s all your decision, I will always hate Rutgers though.

Also, I’m heading to Boston University tomorrow for the Admitted Students Engineering Open House. We’ll see how that goes. I’m trying to keep my options open, and not be drawn automatically to Binghamton. UMICH has still not given me their decision. Rumor is they sometimes give out decisions in June. They’re just that slow…
