hey guys i have shortlisted a lenovo thinkpad t series and macbook pro...which one shld i go for
??
and is windows on a mac work properly...the boot camp allows u to add XP as an OS on macs..is it compatiable with it???

yeah, you can run XP on a mac. Microsoft recently demoed Vista on a mac.

This board is biased towards the PC, I say make up your own mind, they're both good laptops.

There was just a forum on this made a couple of days ago on the "college life" forum, and many times over. Either one is fine.

This is my opinion:

The macs are without doubt the prettiest laptops made ever!!! Though, being a heavy computer user, I prefer the plain and simple black look of thinkpads.
But these are just esthetics.

1) The intel core duo platform is really new. This means that there are still things to correct. For example, in a macbook pro there was this problem of overheating. In the newer thinkpads (t60, x60) there was a problem with a crappy driver that slowed everything down, etc.
I think most of such problems are being solved, but you should still keep in mind that it aint great to buy the first generation of a product.

2) The thinkpads have this exelent pointing stick. (If you hate it they also have a normal trackpad) The thing is that after getting used to this stick, you become much much faster; there is no need to take your hands off the keyboard to move the mouse cursor. Personnaly I dont want a MAC just because it doesnt have a stick!

3) Windows Vista may sound great, but do not expect it to run well at least for several years from now. As before, Vista being a radically new (new kernel, new filesystem, etc) product (as opposed to XP who is based on win 2000), there will be a lot of problems with it. So if you're expecting to run shiny Vista on your new shiny macbook pro, be prepared to be often annoyed

4) There is an extended battery option for thinkpads that apple do not have. I run 7 hours! on a single charge on my t41. If long autonomy is important to you, go for a thinkpad.

So my suggestion would be the following. If you want to stick with windows, then go for a thinkpad t43 (after all, they are the FOURTH generation in the t4 series, no problems left with them!). Or if you like MacOS better, then go for a powerbook. If your main OS will be linux, then go with any of the two!

I hope this helps!

Dammit, when will people realize that "Mac" is short for "Macintosh?" It's not an acronym.

I swear, you people are conspiring with the folks who spell "definitely" as "definately," and the people who use "bias" as an adjective to make my life miserable.

STOP IT. Grrr.

Bias was used correctly earlier in this thread...
I unthink you doubleshould definately newbuy a MAC.

well lookee here, I do believe we have an ickle english major on our hands...

...

ATTACK, SCIENCE NERDS!!

Listen, I'm sorry for my bad english... I've been living in the US only for 4 days and I learned english in my french high school...
Though I still consider that it is not too wise to make remarks about bad english. It shows that you do not have much else to say... And usually when one has not much to say he just keeps quiet....

Besides, who gives a damn if MAC stands for Media access controler or Macintosh.

Who said I had any pretense otherwise? I'm just tired of people making the same silly mistake over and over again.

Well, in theory this board is populated by people who are supposed to be representative of the cream of the crop. I don't know about the rest of you, but I take pride in my at least mild attempts to see to it that I'm not another mouth breathing language rapist.

And yes, I do believe in cutting slack to the non-natives, for they're both expected to be bad and good at the same time. However, in my defense, SuperDimer showed no hint of being a non-native, and outside of that silly little mistake, was spot-on for the most part.

If anything, SuperDimer should be flattered that I would hold him (her?) to a native standard: he's just that good.

Not necessarily. A colon can be used there because I was explaining something. Besides lists, a colon can be used "to separate an explanation, rule, or example from a preceding independent clause."

That was an explanation.

Oh, and my inclusion of one "(her?)" was more of a question than an act of PC language butt-kissing. The constant use of "him or her" is clunky and oftentimes unnecessary when the general masculine pronoun suffices.

what kind of troll corrects language on a forum? oh well we go to the better school so there : )

Troll? Get off it. Learn what a "troll" is, first. I made a little snide remark about the misuse of an acronym, and now it's blown up into a classic case of e-drama. Admittedly, my first mistake was to be so caustic, but it was just so fun at the time. You might even say it was cathartic. It's especially fun to watch the egos self-inflate and try to defend what was a clear error with the forum crusader's shield of "it's just a forum!" But of course, that was my second mistake: I should have never ASSumed that people would just say, "oops, I messed up and got overly sassed. It's time to sit down, regardless." No, for this is a forum. And on a forum, the rule always is, "if they're zinging you, they're a troll or a jerk or both. Oh, and never stand down!"

Either way, call me a troll all you want. Hell, people call sakky a troll. I suppose I'm in good company.

To answer the original question, the macbooks look cool, but the thinkpads are better work machines, go Lenovo
