i am an international student from egypt currently living in kuwait.
Here are my stats:

TOEFL 273
I am a junior and i am taking my SAT 2s in math IIC phy and chem at the start of next year. i expect to get 750+ in all of them
finished my AS and currently doing my A-levels
at my IGCSE's my grades were A* in maths, chem, phy, accounting, arabic and geography. I got A's in biology and english language and english literature.
by the end of my senior year i will have accomplished
A level in maths, chem and arabic.
AS (Advance Subsidary) in physics, furhter maths and geography.
My predicted grades in all of them are A except a B in chemistry.
throughout high school i have gotten a's in all my subjects except two B's in english and a B in art.
EC's and Leadership roles:
Model United Nations
Debate Team
Varsity Soccer
Rugby Club
Student Representative Council
Vice Captain of house (hopefully captain next year)
interschool swimming competition
Head of Quiz team for years in a row
participant in school assembly three times and in school productions twice

All these are the ones i am currently doing in my junior yr and will hopefully continue in my senior yr in addition to the hope of being a prefect next yr.
I also gained third place in a national maths competition where more then 250 students take place.
How do u rate my chances at the following schools:

MIT
Caltech
Berkley
Cornell
Carnegie Mellon
U of Illinois Urbana
Purdue

Feel free to add other safties and matches
thanx a lot

forgot to add that i helped once a week this yr (and probably next yr) in the schools section for disabled students.
i also have some summer work experience in a plastics factory

My advice : study like hell and bring up your SAT I verbal score to atleast 700, or you will regret later, like me.

some more schools:
UMich : extremely good school for engineering >>www.umich.edu
Georgia Tech: another good school >>www.gatech.edu
Virginia Tech : good safety >>www.vt.edu

thanx a lot. but how id u regret it? And i cant bring that Verbal score up any more. if i take the SAT again it will be the new one which is more verbal than maths. in other words i am f****d. U still didnt mention any chances at the universities i mentioned

you do have a year right?? I would still say : go for some prep classes (if you are finding it too difficult), and atleast get a 2200/2400 (aim for 800M 700V and 700W) on the new SAT, if you do so, your chances at all schools will be increased greatly.

your chances at all the schools you mentioned above are good (provided you are not applying for financial Aid), except MIT & Caltech.

btw its berk*e*ley and also add Northwestern<www.northwestern.edu> & Stanford<www.stanford.edu> to that list.

And at present you have no other option but to take the new SAT because you need SAT II Writing for many schools, and the last SAT II will be adminstered in Jan, so start prepping now itself for that 2200+

Actually the universities i mentioned do not require the SAT 2 writing for international students. As a matter of fact, many universities such as MIT give the option to substitute your SAT score with your Toefl. so if i apply there i qont even tell the my SAT score. Just my TOEFL (which is pretty good) and my SAT 2's which will also be really good (hopefully)

I would drop Carnegie Mellon and add Michigan-Ann Arbor.

It is unlikely that you will get into either MIT or Caltech, but they are still worth applying to.

The other schools are all realistic.

I would apply to the following schools in order of overall excellence:

Stanford
MIT
UC-Berkeley
CalTech
Michigan-Ann Arbor
Cornell
Illinois-Urbana Champaign
Purdue-West Lafayette

Best of luck to you.

i hear that getting into stanford is much harder than getting into MIT and Caltech so im applying to only two of them just for fun basically coz i know i wont get in. Regarding Purdue, could it be considered a safety?

what do the universities such as MIT Caltech and Stanford want in a student?
what do u think would be my greatest weakness in the college admissions preocedure. btw... i do not really mind if all the universities i apply to reject me coz i have some backups in canada and a definite safety in egypt. but i was just wondering wat kind of qualities are needed by an MIT student? its been kind of my dream getting into that university......

MIT looks for a student with... perfect maths and science. Lots of maths/science oriented awards. I heard that they look for the maths/science geek, but also looks for the 'cool' geeks.. lol you know what I mean?

The new SAT comes out in March so you could take the current one in January.. Your verbal score may not really be a critical factor in such schools like MIT and Caltech, but it could hurt your chances for Berkeley, Cornell, ...
I agree with hello: You should add Northwestern to your list: as a good match.

and yes, purdue - saftey for u.

Your greatest weakness for some of those schools is your verbal score. Although stats are not everything, 530 sounds.. really low. Maybe, bumping it to the 600 mark will be better. I highly suggest the January test date.

Your ECs are well rounded! good luck!

Your EC's are well rounded but you dont seem to take on the important roles in them. being in model UN and rugby club or varsity soccer doesnt realli prove anything. The only leadership you've shown is in Student Representative Council amd Vice Captain of house. And I think this is pretty weak for the top schools before even considering the fact that internatinal pool is tuff.

It seems as if you want to study engineering but you'll need to win some maths/science awards for that. I see that you study in a UK schools, then didnt you take the UKMT math competitions tests? They're pretty ez to get golds on. I think ur app. lacks in awards.

Everything else looks great! Like those ppl said, work on yer verbal.
