A Major Contrast: Please Help!

Hi guys, I was recently accepted to both University of Southern California and Dartmouth College. Obviously, these two schools are pretty different...(west coast/east coast, really urban/really rural, different weather, different sizes, etc, etc, etc...)

Can anyone knowledgeable about these schools compare them? Or even just give support to one of them... I know they are totally different! Any opinions welcome :)

what do you plan on studying?

Dart is probably better overall, but that highly depends on what you're into

I've applied undecided to both schools, with no major plan. I plan on NOT studying engineering/math/natural sciences/pre-med though....

Isn't Dartmouth early decision? If so, aren't you bound to that school? I might be wrong; maybe it's early action.

I think their likely letters are out.

Unless there's something specific that appeals to you to at USC (a certain program/major, location, athletics, etc.), Dartmouth is definitely the better choice.

This is easy. Go to Dartmouth. The only factors I can think of in favor of USC would be film/drama/theater/radio/communication and Div I sports.

Yeah, likely letters came out last week.... or the first wave of them anyways... I visited Dartmouth last fall and stayed overnight so I got a dose of that, and I'm leaving for LA in 2 days to visit USC/go to a scholarship thing.... Hopefully my gut instinct will just speak to me???

No contest, USC isn't even close to Dartmouth.

I have a friend who selected USC over Williams (certainly comparable to Dartmouth in some ways) That being said, she did so because she felt Williams was slightly "too intellectual" and not provide ample enough opportunity for socialization, drinking, etc. (imagine what she would have thought of Swarthmore!)
Some would argue that the intellectual resources at USC are in fact greater - it is larger than Dartmouth, no? The professors of linguistics are wonderful; additionally, the violin/viola teacher is among the best in the nation. But one can generalize to a certain extent: students at D, taken as a whole, will probably have the tendency to be more intellectual and academic than those at USC. You must weigh your interests carefully; if you choose USC over Dartmouth, you would be treading on the "road less traveled;" that has its risks and its rewards.

One vote for Dartmouth, right here.

If you plan on doing anything theatre/music/entertainement/business=related, then go with USC.

Otherwise, go with Dartmouth.

Also, do you want to live in a very rural or very urban place? If you prefer one over the other, then your choice is made.

Haley, Dartmouth is obviously a better undergraduate institution than USC. However, going to a great university (like Dartmouth) if you are going to hate it is really not worth it. If you do not like secluded rural locations Dartmouth is probably not the place for you. I will give you some pros and cons...and I am sure they are not 100% correct, so hopefully others with chip in an correct me.

USC:
Better weather
Better Engineering
Better location if you like urban settings
Better undergraduate Business (Dartmouth does not have undergraduate Business)
Better looking students (shallow but true)
Better entertainment opportunities
Better spectator sports opportunities

DARTMOUTH:
Better academics
Better students
Better reputation
Better environment
Better locatrion if you like the great outdoors
Better socializing opportunities

Like I said, those aren't 100% accurate, but it is my take.

Zahra, I doubt any student body drinks more than Williams'! I would be willing to bet that Williams' students consume more alcohol than USC's student body...in the absolute sense! LOL But Williams is very secluded and rural...possibly more so than Dartmouth.

I'd think that the USC student body consumes more alcohol. I live close to USC (15 mins away) and will be attending Williams next year.

Based on my observations from friends and family I think that USC has quite a few moderate drinkers. Student per student alcohol consumption might be slightly higher at Williams, but USC has a student body population 8 times larger than Williams.

It is absurd to say that, "...Williams' students consume more alcohol than USC's student body..."

I was obviously exagerating. But there are plenty of opportunities to party and drink at Williams. That was the point I was trying to make.

...sorry, I know, I know you were exaggerating. I just find subject a little touchy =/.
