Some people are probably (unfortunately) incapable of learning from such training. They may need a deep revision in their beliefs, not just sensitivity training in how to avoid offending others. It’s always hard to know what students are really internalizing.
I had a professorial colleague who received this evaluation from a student in her course, “Mrs. H. Thank you for helping to raise my level of ignorance.”
no doubt it is real, but the person/people behind it may very well be found in the crowd protesting. it has happened many times before.
look, i dislike jocks, frats etc… but i believe in truth and integrity. and duke has never corrected itself from the duke lacrosse hoax. they tore down the lacrosse house and paid out a lot of cash to lacrosse team as they should have.but the frenzy on campus from the students to administration and a bunch of faculty was a near lynch mob mentality , there was very scary words and behavior against the lacrosse team. but when the truth came to light no soul searching or apologies, no faculty fired nothing. just cash payouts and tearing down the lax house.
While your feelings are understandable, with all due respect, lets keep this discussion about these current incidents, not about issues that were beaten to death here years ago.
A hoax that happens to be truly believable when considering the culture and town-gown relationships. With parties with insensitive themes still in favor, there are few reasons to go slow at Duke and its group of peers.
Forgive me for being obtuse, but how could zobroward’s scenario apply here? Regardless of who put the noose there, they could be red, green, purple or orange, it is inappropriate and upsetting to fellow students. There is no denying the noose was seen, and there are many pictures of it on the web (no I will not post a link). And, the student responsible has been identified.
But after the bru-ha-ha at Oklahoma, the discriminatory comments at UCLA and the dismissal of the Bucknell students, how big of a bozo does someone have to be to do this on campus? They are citing FERPA guidelines to keep identifying information private.
the duke story went cold real quick and the administration got quiet as did the students who were protesting. I would say the person who did it may not actually be kicked out because it would be uncomfortable for the school. they want to give zero detail and just say the student was removed. smells very fishy.
