So, my school has this policy with midyear reports--they don't fill them out, but instead just send a report card with the 1st and 2nd quarter (no midterm, thank god).

AP Lit: B-/A+ <----Teacher has very limited view of what is a 'good' essay; took me a while to adapt to his style
AP Physics: B-/B- <---- hardest class in school, teacher centers tests so that the average is a C
AP Psychology: B+/C+ <----OMG WTH?
AP Statistics: B/B+ <----hilarious teacher, Cuban accent, impossible to tell what he's saying but it's Statistics so that's OK.
Senior Seminar: A-/A- <----the teacher of this is the advisor for 2 of the clubs I've started. Lot of leeway.

I made the stupid mistake of thinking that senior year was worth nothing (not to mention the hell that is college apps), so I dropped a lot of studying for school and instead went full throttle into Mock Trial (we're going to states again this year). So the classes where I did not need to memorize things (Lit, Stat, Seminar) I did fine in, but the ones where I needed to constantly practice (Physics, Psych) I've done horribly in.

I applied to Ivy-caliber schools. Laugh.

If it were an average, I'd be OK with it, but the grades are what will show on the report. My Physics teacher wrote a rec, so he might explain the insanity that is his class, but Psych is inexcusable. I accept this.

There's a lot of complicated little things regarding my info, but it's basically:
34 ACT
2240 SAT
760/730/730 SAT IIs (USH, Lit, and World Hist)
Top 9% of my school (top 4% if not in an extremely competitive magnet program)
Co-founder and head of three clubs (Mock Trial, Forensics, Amnesty International) - Mock Trial county champions (second year running)
Political editor of school newspaper
A year of volunteering at a local hospital
Internship at local courthouse

your midyear report will hurt you. It's not like you have As in most of your classes, and Bs in a couple. The "Senior Seminar" class doesnt sound like you had to work hard to get in A in, and the fact that you had a B in every other class for semester average, except for Lit isnt great. But if they thought you were in already, i doubt theyll change their mind. if you are a "border candidate" this could cause them to reject you.

Senior Seminar is a required class for my magnet program. It's actually pretty hard--but the teacher knows me, so I had more leeway with some homework (because she knew that I was spending 6 hours a day in a courtroom).

look what you should take from my post is if you were a long shot for your schools to begin with, this wont help you, nor will it help you if youre a borderline admit. however, do remember that the senior midyear report is probably not as big of a deal as the other components of your app. although it varies from school to school.

It will definitely hurt you badly, but it can't be said for sure that you'll be rejected. Your midyear shows that you slacked off real bad and colleges aren't gonna forgive that too easily.

I didn't slack off... For one class, the language class, it was a whole totally different and harder experience which I wasn't accustomed to... and in history, I dunno actually... Good attempt at sarcasm though

@Milkmagn, I had a couple B's on my mid-year and dropped my 3.95 GPA to probably 3.91. I got early approval letters from Stanford and Columbia. I don't think the mid-year matters that much.
