Hello! My name is Jack, I am currently a junior in high school. I created this post because I am in a tight situation and I need some help. Due to a health issue, I did not do well in freshman year. I spent some time in the hospital (2 or 3 times a month). I struggled but I managed to barely pass.
9th Grade: I took 2 APs. My UW GPA for 9th grade was a 3.4 (I got a C the second semester).
10th Grade: I moved to a new state (Virginia), and the grading system is different here, so my UW GPA went down to a 3.3. My W GPA was a 3.6. My condition got better, but occasionally it would come back. By the end of 10th grade, my W GPA went up to a 3.8… and UW GPA a 3.6. I took another 2 APs.
I took dual enrollment courses during the summer and got As in both classes.
11th Grade: I changed schools once again! My UW GPA is lower, and my W GPA is at a 3.51 now. In the new school, I am top 8%. There are about 3000-3500 students. I am currently taking 6 APs. My goal is to get all As (and I will).
I was/am part of many clubs, Student council (had a leadership role), math club (won a few competitions), and much more.
I volunteer at the public library and have over 100+ hours.
Due to my condition I was not able to play sports.
I took the ACT and got a 34 composite score.
My question, is it possible for me to get into colleges like UCLA, Cornell, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, UT Austin, Gerogia Tech, etc.?
I could explain about my condition, and how I improved from 9th grade? I can talk about it in my essays. Will colleges take my condition into consideration?
You live in VIRGINIA. We have two “public ivies.” Why do you want to attend out of state public universities that will cost a lot and won’t offer merit aid? Privates universities on your list I understand.
University of Virginia is pretty high ranked. It’s top 30 I believe.
Most of the schools will cost 55k a year with little to no aid, so be prepared for that.
Your school must be very tough, 3.51 Weighted at top 8%…do you know how many kids your school sends to these college every year?
The UCs will be full fees or $55k+ per year to OOS students, and they look at 10th/11th grades. Your ACT score is okay, but GPA does not appear to be competitive for UCLA.
Virginia has really good schools-do some research on your instate schools.
There are about 2 to 3 people who go to the ivys every year. The instate schools are good for other programs that I don’t want to do. I want to study out of state. Money is not an issue (at least I think so). UCLA doesn’t calculate your freshman year GPA, so I think I might have a chance.
Instead of being “pretty sure” about finances, ask your parent for a firm, minimum commitment, a real number. Many students are surprised so you better learn now how much they are able/willing to invest in your college education.
Addendum. Dsmissing Virginia’ colleges in such a cavalier manner shows a lack of maturity. Please find two, which may not be dream schools, but that have some characteristics you like.sure you want to study out of state but you’re old enough now to have experienced the difference betwee between “want” and reality… what if, for any reason, something happens? You MUST have safeties and, in particular, instate safeties.
I do have one saftey school here in Virginia. I just wouldn’t like to go there that’s all. I will do some research and find one more. I talked to my parents and they are willing to pay up to 60k.
Ok so I just found out that University of Virginia is ranked #23. Even though it doesn’t have great CS program I will most likely apply to that. In-state its $12000. UCLA is not $55,000, its around $35,000 and UCB is $25,000
Direct Costs Charged by UC Berkeley

Total Direct Costs $27,820
Other Estimated Costs

***Out-of-state residents add $24,708 in Nonresident Supplemental Tuition. Actual tuition, fees, and charges are subject to change by the Regents of the University of California and could be affected by increases or reductions in State funding or other developments.
At that link it says “out-of-state tuition and fees are $38,140 (2015-16).” Is there something else besides tuition and fees that students have to pay for?
