A public service announcement for any NMSFs...

If you are a National Merit Semifinalist and have applied to NEU, send them your NMSF information. A scanned copy of your congratulations letter will probably be sufficient; if not, they will inform you.

The full-tuition scholarships for finalists are available again this year, though they may not be guaranteed for all current semifinalists. Get in your information now so that your information is on record.

Northeastern University's National Merit and National Achievement Finalist Scholarships

Admitted freshman applicants who are designated National Merit Finalists or National Achievement Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) are eligible to receive up to a full tuition scholarship. Scholarship recipients must be admitted to Northeastern and designate us as your college choice to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation before May 1. In order to be fully considered for one of these scholarships, please send Northeastern a copy of any certificates or letters that you receive from the NMSC. This includes NMSC Semifinalist and Finalist documentation. These documents should be submitted to Undergraduate Admissions via fax or email. Fax number: Undergraduate Admissions, 617-373-8780. Email: Iliana Figueroa, i.figueroa@neu.edu. National Merit and Achievement Finalists may also be considered for Northeastern’s Trustee Scholarship (below).

I currently have a different school listed as my top choice - a school that I won’t find out my decision on until April 1st. If I don’t get into that other school, though, I’d like to declare NU as my top choice and hopefully receive the full tuition scholarship (I’ve already been accepted there with a Dean’s scholarship & honors program). Should I still send them that NMSF stuff now? And, as I understand it, I could still get the scholarship even if I don’t declare them until after April 1st considering it says “by May 1st” – right? Thanks for any insight.

I would think that they would have to be your official top choice school, which would mean that you would have to write to National Merit now to make your top school “undecided,” then change that when you find out from your top school in April. Unless, of course, you think that the National Merit top choice will significantly improve your chances of admission. I don’t really know. You should contact Northeastern.

Alright, thanks a lot!
