A quesiton about declaring Econ major

Hi everyone,

I am a transfer student and just finished my first semester in Cal, I intend to declare Econ major. But, what is the GPA required to declare Econ major?
Some said we need 2.7 or above. Anyone knows?

Thanks a lot!!

Minimum = 3.0

Depending on the students that apply…

3.4 = safe

If you have below 3.0, they won’t look at your app

If you have around a 3.0, you should probably write the optional personal statement

hey starry night
thanks for answering so many questions! this is for my friend who’s in a different college (environmental economics and policy) and wishes to transfer into the college of letters and science economics.

if she has around 3.4 g.p.a and she’s ready to declare her major, does she have to write a personal statement due to the fact that she’s not from the college of l & s ?

or can she just turn in her application and it will be all set?

thanks!

Thanks, it is so difficult to declare econ!!!
If I could not declare econ, could I choose environmental economics and policy?
Are those EEP courses difficult?

Yes, you can choose whatever major you want!
Econ is one of the few impacted majors on campus.

Impacted means that you actually have to apply aka. harder to get into.
If a major is not impacted, then you can just declare once you meet the reqs.

EEP is not impacted.
Most people say EEP is easier as it’s mostly filled with people who did not make Econ.

I believe you have to first transfer from CNR into LS…
It’s harder to transfer between colleges than to apply for a major.

I have a question as a soon-to-be-sophomore:

Is the minimum 3.0 GPA just counting the prereqs, or total GPA?

Also, when’s a good time to declare?
I will be completing my prereqs this fall, so would I declare at the same time? Or should I wait till spring?

They look at both, but the pre-req GPA is more important
check out their website:
[Prospective Majors](http://elsa.berkeley.edu/econ/ugrad/prospect_admissions.shtml)

Declaring:
A good time to declare would be at the latest, Spring of your Sophomore year.
Beyond that, it’ll be hard pushing. Econ major has a 5 semester/80 unit cap.

StarryNights,

How can I transfer from CNR into LS ?
I think I will probably fail to declare econ major. So, I need to plan to declare EEP.
Let me tell you some of my info. first.

I am a transfer and I had finished 66 transferable units in CC. I just finished 13 units in Spring (100A+100B+Stat 21+1 unit decal). I am going to study 8 units in summer.

Is that possible to graduate before next summer, if I study hard in the coming summer, Fall and Spring?

Thanks
