A Question About Early Decision

My first choice is Brown University, and I want to apply ED. But one can never be sure of how the financial aid will end up working, only a rough estimate with calculators and stuff. I want to apply to Brown ED, but I don't want to have to blindly accept the financial aid if it puts too much EFC on my family (and indirectly me).

My friend was telling me that there is a way to get out ED (if you get in), and not have to go, if there are financial reasons. Is he telling the truth?

Yes. If you cannot afford the college you are allowed to decline the acceptance. Unfortunately only then are you allowed to apply to other schools. That is the danger with ED.

Sorry, I must contradict my friend. :frowning:

When you apply ED you are free to apply to other schools, but if you are accepted by the ED school (and you accept their FA offer), you must withdraw the apps to other schools.

^ Correct. Bad writing on my part.

I am missing something. I’d appreciate it if someone could clarify this for me.

But, if you have any doubts with doing ED, wouldn’t it simply be better to do EA instead?

Better chances. And rejecting would be financial, not other schools.

Most people do select EA if it’s available. Some schools offer ED but not EA.
