There goes a lot of things that comes in being admitted to prep schools. I have gone through that this year and it was quite hectic applying to seven different schools in NYC. Fortunately, I got accepted into four of the seven schools that I applied to: Brearley, Spence, Nightingale-Bamford, and Berkeley Carroll.
But the main point is that if you have any questions regarding the admissions process and are applying to prep schools for the academic year of 2017-2018, then feel free to ask any questions. Either I or any other individuals familiar with the process will answer your questions to the best of our knowledge. We can give you helpful tips on what to do, doesn’t matter whether it’s for day schools (I am mostly familiar with the process for the ones in New York City) and boarding schools (just about anywhere in the States).
The part about the 2017-2018 academic year is only for FUTURE APPLICANTS. If you have applied already, then you don’t have to worry about that. This space is for ANYONE who has questions.
hey so i might move to New York from India next year (in the 11th grade)
which schools should i apply to? and what do they look for in expat/international students?
i don’t have a GPA or anything…
Thanks!
@starduste
In regards for your GPA…
You are in international student, AOs have experience and they know that India does not have a typical GPA system… You (thankfully ) are not the first Indian applicant… Call the schools and ask them their procedures… Also from what I have gleaned from my friends in India, is that you guys have finals and board exams… you probably will have to submit something related to that …
Also, @galaxy101 thanks for the posting the thread, but isn’t the whole point of CC to ask individual questions and the whole of CC being the ‘Question Center for Applicants and to … ASK ANYTHING’ LOL sorry but I just had to point that out…
@Atria
Thanks!
Which schools should i look at applying to?
Ive read about many prep schools like the ones you mentioned. Is there a vast difference between public and private? Which one is better
@starduste
My family moves a lot, but we lived in NY when I was in elementary, so I don’t know much about the public high schools there. But it is generally viewed that private schools have better academics and offer more opportunities. It quite easy to see where they come from, public schools are funded by the government and private schools are obviously privately funded. So, private schools have more money and endowments from alumni… While money cannot buy happiness, it certainly allows the schools to hire (arguably) better teacher, have smaller class sizes, better clubs and other opportunities (like travel abroad)… The again there are many favorable arguments for public schools… @GMC2918 do want to help me out here ? (lol singling you out here bc you were saying something public school not being vastly better in another thread so )
We plan to attend an informational session on boarding schools soon which is held by tenschools.org in a neighboring city. Does anyone have any idea what the dress code would be for this event? We were planning to go “business casual” but could put on a suit and tie if needed. Thanks
@yearstogo I think a suit and tie would be too much… You should dress nicely (i.e no ripped jeans, loose t-shirts…) business casual will do… I don’t think you have to be as formal as you might be in an interview… Just a notch below… it is just a ‘informational’ meeting …
